Hello! We’re 2 second year vet students from Uni of Edinburgh looking for a one-week cattle placement in the 1st/2nd week of Jan 2021. Accommodations would be preferred but if there’s anywhere nearby to stay would be great too! (But unfortunately we both can’t drive) We would love to help out at the farm & we’re very excited to learn about cattle farming! Do let us know if you’re willing to take us and thank you so much :)

Good luck with finding a placement and good luck with your studies, the agricultural industry needs the support of the veterinary profession. Please ignore any negative comments on this forum, I am sure you realise you would need a driving licence once you qualify, certainly if you were to join a rural practice. You have come to the right place to find a placement, would any part of the country be more preferable? or are you able to travel nationally?

Try the 'work for keep' pages. (Don't know their proper name). I use Workaway and have had helpers from several countries. Basically, you get free board and lodgings in return for a few hours work a day. And, no, I don't have a dairy farm, but good luck anyway.

Anywhere within the UK would be great! & thank you so much 😊

And
As I've said in a pm to yourself, your looking for a week...mon to Friday, so 5 days.
Most farmers myself included will find that more hassle than it is worth. We only have people for a minimum of 14 days. It takes 5 days to get into the swing of it.
Wish you best of luck.
and with the COVID situation welcoming a student onto your farm probably needs careful consideration.

Placements are always hard to find. My daughter was a Bristol vet student and I cannot imagine how she would have managed with the split site not being able to drive. Think if your going to compete against the Bristol students getting a driving licence should be your top priority.

I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole. Too many people with an axe to grind looking to contribute to Vet and Tell, farmers are animal hating non-PC bigots type articles with zero interest in being helpful

To the students how wrote this thread, im very sorry you seem to have received such negative advice from most posters, Having used vet students in the past im more than sure that you are both very capable and if not ik dare say you will be very quick to learn . A weeks experience is better than no experience, As for a driving licence , we have never asked our students to drive anywhere tho we have picked them up from a train station. Students tend to be very limited by time as the course is very difficult and lots of study time. Good luck in your search and sorry that the other posters were bit grumpy.

Weve had vet students for the last 4 years and are hoping to have them for many more years. Still not interested in 5 days. Its not long enough to get "experience"
As for the driving license, all our previous students have had a license and enjoyed looking around the local area in their down time and the freedom to do as they wish in the evenings.
Not being grumpy, just realistic. If you only want to do 5 days, its to tick a box. Very least turn up Friday 5pm and leave Sunday 5pm and enjoy 9 days on farm.

I agree. It isn't just the on-farm/livestock side of things that they need to engage with, it's the community feel and people aspect, too. I agree it seems a box ticking requirement. Might as well go and camp on a farm for 5 days.

For a demanding course of study (and vocation!) I would have concerns about students who are taking the path of least resistance or just accept they probably have no interest in farm livestock.

Hopefully, they didnt realise the points that have been made and will be having a think about how they can get more hours in, possibly on a mor permanent basis.

I agree with what's been said though, you need to be doing regular work on a farm for ideally a year including milking, calving and lambing imo
