Hiya, I’m a farm worker but am wanting to an evening welding course or a week intensive course which some of my local colleges provide
Which comes with a cost, I’m told there is government grants that employers can apply to for under 22s or is the on I can apply too?
it’s a skill that would be useful to have I think

Good plan is to get access to a welder…some bits of scrap steel…some bog standard rods…
Get some one to show you the basics..
Shut your self away in a workshop somewhere and have a go…
Nothing difficult…just things like getting a decent bead well burnt in…correct amount of power …angle of the rod..
Get the someone back to sort out the bits that you are finding difficult.
Shut yourself away again…
Then go on the course…your previous experience will mean you will benefit much more from the course rather than being a Raw Starter..

It is a very useful skill. Local farming groups or training groups usually will have the odd course. If your employer is registered with them it's often subsidised.A lot of us are self taught too. Where in the country are you?

useful stuff on here ,

there's a forum and they sell some gear as well.

even with a course/lessons experience comes with just doing it , so as long as you have the basics learnt just crack on and practice.

If i were just staring i think i would get a fume helmet /filter /blower.from the get go.

I wonder if your local college offers evening courses?
IMO it’s worth a t’internet search or a ‘phone call.
Your learning curve will be vertical if you are taught by a master of his trade as opposed by the rather dodgy suck-it-and-see that some folk advocate.
One of the most useful things I did at Maidenhead College forty years ago, was their three term evening course on welding.

I did a course 45yrs ago with the YFC ,a local engineer/fabricator took it, trouble is it wasn't just 1 to 1,several on the course. and limited time to actually use the gear beyond the theory ,yes certainly taught basics but cant beat plenty of just doing it , like everything you wont get anywhere or learn anything by standing on ceremony.
Chap is long gone now but very hard worker and knew everything about metalworking, i do remember him saying that he couldn't weld galve steel any longer as it made him wheeze and cough after.

Agree in learning the basics but also learning some of the science gives one an insight into the how.
I would still advocate a college course to get the very best instruction.
A one day course ‘aint gonna cut it when you take on a machinery repair without a good foundation.
There were five on our course. 20 weeks of instruction & learning plus dismantling each weld to see how technique or lack of affected each pass.
Agree with the ‘getting on’ and practice, learning about how your welder & rods behave but without foundations no amount of practice will help adjust for the subtleties.
I’ve seen too many pigeons poop on trailer repairs I’m afraid😢🤣🤣🤣
Sorry for being so cynical🤪
