They expect to be paid reasonably well for the standard working week, times have moved on.
Times have moved on, and people complain that they can't afford to buy houses.

Thought you where there full timeBeen doing 80-90 hrs a week last few months, getting wrapped up with land work now so down to about 50-55 a week with a couple of weeks holiday to wedge in before I start combining mid July
Still manage to do most of those things, and I'm not usually home until 8pm. I'd rather work now than when I'm 50.
I don't think it's just farmers. My friends in other industries, with a general work ethic would think it's a bit alien to finish at 5.
You must have core hours surely?Staff here can work whatever hours they want ......... as long as they get the work done
Give and take imo be flexible with them and they will be flexible with you in return

Welcome to the real world.
There's not many farmers working till midnight yes there's always the exception but most work no more and sometimes much less then mister averageLet’s face it if you are working for someone else you ain’t going to be busting your balls till midnight every night, you want to get home and do stuff with family and friends ect....there’s only farmers who own their own farm working till bedtime
Guilty .Anyone else thought many farmers are just inefficient faffers and it takes twice as long to get anything done than it should?
8am-4pm, or 9am-5pm. Monday through Friday only.
Any Saturday working should be kept to the bare minimum and paid at double time when absolutely necessary with Monday off. Nobody should ever be expected to work more than 40 hours a week on average, they are entitled to a life away from work too.
Some do. And some don’t. Some folks have a machine like work rate to the point where you think how the hell do they get through all that graft. But that could be true in any profession I should imagine.Anyone else thought many farmers are just inefficient faffers and it takes twice as long to get anything done than it should?
You say 'most' of those things, so which of them are you missing out on?
This is a good quote from bill gates you may have heard it before 'I will always choose a lazy person to do a difficult job because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it.'Guilty .
Trying to work more efficiently and stop being a busy fool!.
You must have core hours surely?
What about overtime, Health & Safety ?
I’m the same tbh my hobby has also been my own stock sort of thing. But I think the point in question is you can’t expect staff to treat your stock/livelihood as their hobby. They will have there own interests and activities outside of the bubble that farmers tend to have around there own farm.I don't always read a bedtime story, and some nights I'm not back in time to see my daughter to bed. But nor was my father and I'm very thankful that he worked when he did. I didn't need to see him everyday.
I don't have a hobby but I enjoy my work and the farm so I don't really feel the need for one.
No, I have stepped outside of farming a little to diversify and have realised how slow other sectors are.Anyone else thought many farmers are just inefficient faffers and it takes twice as long to get anything done than it should?
I agree, but I don't think people are encouraged to work enough hours. Once they've taken off 28 days holiday, then they only work for 4 days of the 7 out of 48 the weeks remaining.I’m the same tbh my hobby has also been my own stock sort of thing.
