Only read the headline bit but if it's 25% for everyone that's still a huge amount of land potentially not producing food, personally I think that setting a limit is a good thing

25% cap on land out of production. Looks like some of you will have to carry on farming!
I’ve put a 3rd of the the farm going into winter bird food under sfi and accepted the offer so wonder if they will try and amend this now?
Already got some down to bird food in stewardship so technically will be more than a 3rd in total.
However the sfi will be in rotation so not actually of production in theory!

The website says we will hear more details in the coming weeks.
I think there would be an outcry if it were retrospectively imposed on existing agreements.

The plan is - winter barley - wbf -spring barley (or canary seed) then either back to winter barley of wheat depending.
So not actually taking anything out of production if the plan works.
you will hit the 25 % limit unless that rotation is only on half your farm

i expect when the details come out they will add the 6 actions area and it will have to be less than 25% of your total land area

they may allow existing sfis but on the aniversary they will say you have to reduce the 6 actions

it will not stop over winter cover before spring crops

Not sure that is in the spirit of the regime, was speaking to my buying group boss the other day and he feels while it's in the rules (just) he thinks it will either result in either the option being dropped or it will need drilling by end of may.

Under the current rules it’s aloud so going to make the most of it while I can.
We generally grow a catch crop after winter barley which has always produced a seed by September so can’t see what the problem is as long as it’s meeting the requirements.

Also if they’re worried about too much land coming out of production why make it so you can’t grow a crop and still meet the criteria.

So are they restricting farmers from replacing all of our bsp money?

Big success..............14k out of 88k eligible firms,,,about 16% uptake. now they are making it more difficult. hmmmm.

good job these people are not running the country.....oh hang on
Not a hope in hell of replacing the BPS money on all grass livestock farms and its now questionable on mixed farms that have not already applied for SFI.

Maybe it is seeing situations like this that has woken somebody at Defra up into the need to have to include ‘Food” into their SFI strategy. Pictures taken this morning.

Winter Barley. It is there, has had 50Kgs N 2 weeks ago. But until it stops rain long enough and can dry up, won’t feed many.

A bit better.

Now 180degrees looking the distance onto lighter land:
