We don't tend to contract anything due to volumes but just got our first quoted molassed blend through for fresh calvers, £297 a tonne for 16%, 7T drop (our max).

25% barley
20% wheat gluten
15% wheatfeed
12% Novapro
10% rolled wheat
10% maize distillers

Any thoughts?

Seems horrendous, apart from novapro, all the ingredients are less than 297/ton.
Novapro might be too, never heard of it

Mixing & haulage must be expensive or its very dear molasses. Novapro is fancy rape, buggered around with to feed similar to soya, but it ticks a box (& slightly cheaper)

I should pay about the same for a blend with 33% crude protein. 9% soya. No grain in it. Non-gmo and vlog. Only difference is that it’s full loads.

What 16% cake is over 297?

This is about the money. Thinking this for oopf for high yielders with flat rate wheat gluten in parlour.

So look at it another way. 45 litre cow fresh calved. 9.4ppl in purchased feed.
If you can get her to do 50l with good grass 8.5ppl
Like or not?

296£/ton, 36 ton per delivery. I said no and continue with mixing straights myself. Price is 2 weeks old. This is expensive in my world and i really hope prices will come down significantly before newyear. I use my own grain, so i only buy in protein.

Sounds like we need to look again. :ROFLMAO: Never seem to get competitive pricing compared to some of you, I guess partly due to only having 5-7T loads and only 1 load a month, not exactly a big loss if they don't get our business.

Was thinking ahead to getting youngstock out (May 1st usually) after the sun came out yesterday for the first time in months.

Usually replacement heifers get 1-2kg 18% rearer nut while at grass to keep them going, which is currently £280/ton ish.

I can get barley delivered for £165/ton plus £10/ton to get it bruised. Is it worth considering this as an alternative? I could get something to mix it with blown into the rearer feed bin if needed. But I wouldn't actually be mixing them as we don't have the time or facilities to make a mix, I would just feed a bit of both in a trough in the field.

If I was extending this to the beef stores as well, could be using 6 ton a month, so bit of a saving to be had.
