What to replace a manitou 840 with?

I'm afraid this is another "which forklift" thread! We currently have a manitou 840 which has been a really good machine, but a recent issue with the JD engine has put us off replacing it with another.

So far we have had a demo of a Manitou 741 with the hydrostatic trans and the JCB 542-70 agripro with the dualtech trans; both of these are great machines in their own right and both have good points and bad points.

However, our 840 plays with a 3 cube grain bucket; the other two are nothing like as stable with a bucket full of wheat. We also lose 60cm or so of reach which is useful when pushing grain etc. JCBs next machine up is the 550 which is a great lump of a thing for the environment we are working in 50% of the time. We are going to try a Kramer 447 which seems like it might fit the bill. Has anyone any other suggestions that i may have missed (not a Merlo!).

TIA

Glad you like the 840, as there was a thread on here a while ago filled with woe about one!
As for replacement what about Claas/Liebherr?

Yes 840 isnt the greatest machine IMO. shame they wont make the 741 with powershift transmission, only in the vario now.

You could try a Manitou MLT 845 120 LSU they are a bit of a old school brute of a thing though, big heavy chassis but would give you the reach and lift you want plus be stable. you will loose a bit of cycle time as it has twin lift rams and a really fat tilt ram. plus i think it only comes with a 4 speed manual torque converter trans not a 6 speed powershift???

I guess you could also look at a Dieci too as they have machines in that size range.

between all the makes of this size the main difference will come from the transmission set up cause if you dont like a hydro type then you are limited to another 840, the 845 or you go backwards down to a 737 or you have the JCB. Everything else on the market will be hydro transmission i think? which you either love or hate!

I cannot assist in any way but why do you say not a merlo
I should add that I have no connection with merlo in any way just interested

Thanks for the reply. Personal taste (me, boss nor any of our chaps like them) and I’ve not heard much good said about the latest ones. I’ve no doubt that they are good machines, we just don’t want one.

Price point and pokey cab put me off. Steering column makes getting in and out a bit more difficult and we have a lot of hopping in and out to do!

Are you sure you cant get a 840 with deutz engine now?
Theres a deutz engined 2018 mt1340 with less than 300hrs on it on ebay for a bargain £44k.
I know it's a construction machine but its based on the 840 chassis I think?

I’m pretty sure, though I gather there may be plans afoot to change it. I actually really like the new hydro trans in the 741, the worst thing about our 840 is the unpredictable gear changes. I’ll quiz our dealer about the Deutz engine switch. I had thought about dieci but again I know a few folk who have them and have had plenty of bother.

Another 840 would prob be the way to go in many respects but looking back at repairs the only issues have been with the JD engine or ancillaries. Manitou can’t plug in to much of the jd ecu so need to get M L power out from Stratford on Avon for any in depth issues. Not ideal.

Get another 840. At work we went from a 840 to a 741 vario+ and it’s crap!!
Really it’s a poor comparison to the 840. The loader and hydraulics are great. Transmission is very poor, sluggish and very poor pushing power, surges and can’t sit at a steady speed on the road and d it’s on a hill. The 840 could easily out push it shoving loads up.

Any JD dealer will have better stuff to read the JD ecu. Such as Farols for example
The powershift in the 840 is totally different to the powershifts in the 737 machines.

Stratford on Avon? Thats not far from me! If your local i can recommend a very good independent JD man(y)
