What will the no tillers do ?

When glyphosates gone as it's looking likely with France now changing its tune?

Honest question ..... no glyphosate so how will you overcome it if your no tilling?

I'm hopeful (wishful thinking) the chem companies have a glyphosate alternative up their sleeves.

Can't see it myself. I think it's going sooner rather than later and am seriously thinking about buying a used plough to park up in readiness because they'll all go up in value in the short term due to supply and demand.

Is John Miler on here? Manor Farm Newark - AHDB monitor farm, doing a 3 year trial of not using glyphosate, they will have completed their first year.

i really don't think its going

I can see pre harvest going and I can see lower total qty's allowed per crop

but if it does go ....... I think I would go organic / livestock maybe and grow cash crops biannually ??

I don't think I can make money farming with heavy tillage and no sub so the alternative would be to rent my owned land out to someone deluded enough to think that they can

as for my contract farming business I could get ploughs / extra staff and HP very easy but my prices would rise to cover that

frankly if governments insist on making farming harder and harder to a point where it makes no sense any longer I'm not interested in playing their game, there are easier ways to make a living !

I think the only thing we could do is 33% grass, 33% spring cereals and 33% brassica/roots ploughing in front of them all but then using the weather to break it down. It would put our establishment costs up by £30-£40/acre as we'd still be drilling and rolling whatever system was used.

seriously question - why bother Lee ? just rent it for daft money as we can around here ! there comes a point when it really makes no sense and un subsidised heavy tillage farming does not make money on anything but the very best land with no finance or rents to carry

but the rents wouldn't be so high with higher costs would they

Can't see there being any high rents paid though. There must be farmers farming without glyphosate in the uk though so it must because of the plough as you only use glyphosate before drilling and before harvest so if the plough replaces it pre drilling then they'll just cope without it preharvest.

farming yes ? making enough money to be worthwhile ? I doubt it unless they have vey good land, no finance and no rent

and without subs because thats where we are certainly heading ?

So in very basic terms loose £80/ac income from subs whilst increasing establishment costs by £35/ac meaning £115/ac off the bottom line every year before you start.

Renewables is where it's at then.

That's very basic terms however

The real cost would be far higher as I would need x2 extra staff members and at lest x2 more tractors plus ploughs and other kit

My fixed costs would rise go up to a point where it made no financial sense

According to this, it's the tallowamine that could be banned, not the glyphosate itself

Are we getting confused with glyphosate getting banned or the tallowamine?

Would you though? Just get a contractor to plough and then one of your tractor on the carrier and the other on the drill. The contractor charges you a fixed price and leaves when the jobs done so your not carrying any extra staff or a tractor.

And where do those extra contractors come from ? unless they are prepared to work for nothing I'm sure I could run plough(s) (and I would need several if I didn't go back to silly HP heavy tractors) for less than contractor charge

frankly I would more like stop farming all together, as said earlier it doesn't stack up with that extra cost and no sub on land like ours
