What would it take.

I am all prim and proper in the run up to lambing but then at some point I will say " Sod it " ( or words to that effect ) and then spend the next day dying, even the smell of colostrum will have me heaving, sorry TMI :hungover::ROFLMAO:

Back in my YF days a mid lambing night out always happened. I have had to do a rotten lambing hungover, it isn't nice

Actually the worst I remember was at the 'end' of lambing going out and hammering a bottle of brandy... first job on the Sunday was a ewe with bad mastitis. I couldn't face anything the rest of that day

I don't touch drink until the lambing fields are empty these days

Haha! I generally don't drink at " high " points either but a really shitty day lambing can have me reach for the wine towards the end. My worst most recently was a cow with mastitis on a Sunday morning, got her into the crush and hubby started milking her out, he did warn me that I WOULD be sick, he never disappoints!

What would it take for you to give up farming ?
Serious question this one. With the way we farmers are being treated and in some quarters vilified what would it take for you to give it up. ?
"What would it take for you to give up farming" - for me it would be the day i realised that i was becoming a martyr to the farm.
From reading posts all over the forum - a lot already are.

Thanks, it's a strange one really, both of them have never gone without, brothers kids and my sister's children have had or are having a private education, something I could only dream about for my kids, but they both seem to think they're badly off ! Myself and my wife dream is to emigrate to Canada but the situation here makes it pretty impossible to do to be honest ! But you never know what the future holds !

I like the work, donā€™t mind the low hourly pay rate. What I do mind is the 24/7/365 commitment and responsibility. I said something to someone last week... Ā« I would make an excellent farmers father Ā». Iā€™m envious of @Bald Rick
Serious question, is that since you emigrated & started livestock farming rather than your previous growing veg & arable farming ?

Livestock is the answer, which funnily enough I hadnā€™t thought of until your question šŸ™„
But of course, in a family farming kind of situation, the livestock responsibility can be sharedšŸ‘
Of course, I would suggest the big difference is growing up with livestock & not knowing any difference, rather than thinking "wouldn't it be nice to keep a few cattle ?" šŸ˜‰
To be fair, I'll bet growing veg was as hard as keeping cattle or sheep šŸ‘

I think Iā€™d give up if I couldnā€™t keep livestock.

Driving a tractor up and down a field in straight(ish) lines for a fortnight a year isnā€™t proper farming is it?šŸ¤

I told a green leaning clipboard owner last week that if ecoloons got their way and made livestock farming untenable Iā€™d cover the place in solar panels and Barratt homes.

Arable farming doesnā€™t really do it for me. Boredom and breakdowns. And machinery that I donā€™t understand.

Fully intend to carry on to the bitter end though whilst wallowing in stubbornness.

Iā€™m not an alcie, but plenty nights at lambing I need a dram when I come in, just to settle down and ponder the day. Just the one thoughšŸ˜‰

Being forced into spending an absolute ton of money I donā€™t want to borrow will probably do it for me, or staffing going forward. Weā€™ve been so so lucky with staff over the past 40+ years that when I hear what others are having to do and put up with, I just couldnā€™t be arsed.

The next 10 years will be very interesting to say the least.

Any really knee jerk reaction in legislation that makes the job virtually unworkable !!

You are dead lucky if you own the farm and have a black bank account .
If I was in the same position as 30 yr ago with 2 large mortgages and quota to buy etc,and this lot had popped up!!
Uncertainty like never before and the prospect of interest rises v soon .

So ,so lucky we dont owe anything any more and we can dive out of our small way ,whilst using the asset for other things plus a bit of dog and sticking !
In the meantime I still like to see the dairy cows ,but hellif I am going to let people push me into a corner !

So , rather than watching the canal pass us by for the last 50 years ,time to make the most of it :)

A decent payout, the proposed 2.35 x annual SFP is nowhere near enough especially for smaller units. We are both getting pretty demoralised at the moment but I guess our main thing would be our landlord wanting his land back!
Speaking to my landlord yesterday. Reading between the lines he is very worried about the future of farming: much more worried than I am perhaps.
