When is it acceptable to notify someone you won’t be in.

Curious to see what others feel is acceptable and unacceptable. We have a relief milker who’s let us down twice lately under what I feel to be questionable circumstances.

is there a cut off point where you should atleast turn up?
Are others happy to receive messages at any point?
Is there just a massive lacking of people who actually want to work?

I thought you’d binned your student?

student was binned a long time ago thank Christ but another member is skating on very thin Ice.
The problem is part of a bigger issue which maybe isn’t her fault but I got a message at 10:30 last night saying she won’t be in this morning when I was meant to be off as she had a virus ( which is going round and must admit the wife had to milk for me one morning because I couldn’t) but I’m so sure if she’d had it all day that 10:30pm was an appropriate time to let me know. My suspicion is that the virus was shitfaceditus and not got big enough balls to tell me the truth.

In all honesty now I have to expect to be available at all times now. Earlier in the year woke up , went to parlour , which was full of cows and running, but no milker. The Marie Celeste sprang to mind. Milker had a migraine and gone home, no text as no phone apparently.

Bit disappointed to read this and realise our relief milker is moonlighting for you lot!
On the positive side, it seems she treats us all the same.
She's managed three milkings so far in the whole of this month, one of particular note was the text after lunch to say "I might not make this afternoon" and then nothing more. Her next milking is on Friday but I'm not holding much hope of her showing.
Still, new year, new relief milker hopefully.

Depends what's in their contract - generally a couple of hours before start time is "valid" and that's always what I've done.
No, messages NOT acceptable IMO, call or come pack your bags.
Anyone can send a limp-wristed text, if you are paying real pay then a phonecall lets you assess whether the employee is actually crook or just a dud. .
Duds will rule the Earth eventually but for now, at least you can figure out if you're paying one or if it's genuine illness
I'd accept a text to say "sorry slept in, on way" and that'd be fine by me, we've all done it, I'd even make you a brew.
But "Can't come in" when you've already milked a herd is poor, stand up for yourself as no other bugger will

Best of luck, and Merry Christmas @Headless chicken , here's to a new and better year to come (y)

If it’s any consolation @Headless chicken , we have had the norovirus sweep through our relief and full timers too. Only son and I plus another managed to avoid it.

there is no denying it’s on the prowl. I was struck down with it and then rolled straight into some flu which was rather a joyful fortnight. With that said I just see it slightly strange that if she were Ill all day and norovirus Ill you dam well know about it why not a message at lunch time to say Sometbing like I’m feeling a little rough just as a heads up. Atleast I know where I stand then.
