I had a close call with a round baler almost on fire today and it got me thinking I should have an extinguisher on baler. Where would be best to mount one or anybody any pictures I could copy idea. Baler is a 550 mchale

We have them in all tractors. Saved the baler last year (although dad panicked and forgot the first time it went on fire)

Having had a baler fire last week I had a fire extinguisher in the cab I did save the baler but it felt like ages jumping from the baler to the tractor and back and what was smoke turned into 3ft flames when I returned moments later. I’ve replaced the tractor extinguisher and also fitted one to the baler now as well

On the floor beside the seat in the tractor.

If a fire has become 'larger' rather than smaller and you don't think a fire extinguisher will make any difference for godsake unhitch it and keep well away.Tyres under pressure can throw burning rubber at you and heat diesel or oil enough and they become nasty. Watching a machine go up before is not something you readily forget- it's only metal and it is insured.

Finished baling some hay this evening and as I shut the gate on the field I could smell something a bit hot. Opened the side door on baler and saw some dust smoldering away. A bearing had collapsed and it was very hot in there. As luck would have it the was a bucket just next to the gate and a water trough in the field. But when I go for a bearing tomorrow I'm getting a fire extinguisher too.

Not sure I fancy a fire extinguisher to the face if you overturn the tractor!
I’ve had a few machinery fires, first one I sacrificed my clothes and drink and instantly regretted saving the horrible tractor!
The second was a forklift, by the time you would have got the pin out of the extinguisher it would be a waste of time!

Why? Excuse my ignorance I know nothing about extinguishers
Apparently they make too much mess (I did question this as I thought a fire would be messier). But having seen one that went off in the back of a van, and the corrosion it caused after a couple of years I would go for an alternative.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
