How much did they quote you for the new bc5070?
I priced a brand new nh, 5060 or 5070, can't remember model as there where two on offer, ones a farmers machine and the other was a slightly heavier contractors machine, off hand the stronger one was£16000 and the other was £14,500. Bought two ih 440s for £600 instead and baled around 1000 hay bales, and never missed a knot!

They are ridiculously dear, an 1830 I think is the current model

1840. They're not a huge amount more than a Welger. We had a brand new MF in line this season, not a chance we'd go back to a conventional now. Solid bales, fast, easy, straight behind, follows, no messing about up tight lanes and gateways (one of the main reasons we wanted one). Do what suits where you go and what you do.

On our first ever go into baling haylage my auk boy was walking round after to check the length of the bales actually. You clearly have never used a 445d cause I'd be lapping you and your Massey on the second or third lap around the field.
In 1979 IH sent us a prototype 445D to try , my could it gobble it up! The only difference between that one and the older 445 were the knotters, the D stood for Deering which was the STYLE of the 'new' knotters. In reality they weren't new at all , they were manufactured by Rasspe, the same knotters as used by New Holland + many others. Their field engineer admitted to me that the weakest link in The IH baler range was the knotter, so they had decided to 'swallow their pride' as it were and use a different but well-proven knotter instead.
Then later on they went and spoiled it all by ditching the Doncaster built balers and have the new range made by someone else (Vicon I believe?) apparently they weren't that good.

The Vicon balers were pure IH underneath, they were spoilt cos they speeded them up to 90 ram strokes per minute to get more output. But it was a mistake cos it made them unreliable,we still use one but drive it at about 480 which helps a lot
