Why are cast ewes so expensive?

Shortage of numbers as trade has been strong for a while, drawing most of them out. Coupled with abattoirs filling cold stores while they’re sure they can perhaps? Isn’t there a festival about to start very soon too?

Was at the abattoir this morning there was nothing in the cold store, demand is outstripping supply. Was emailed the kill sheet for Mondays mart purchases, some ewes were dearer then hoggs over the scales. Hell of alot were in lamb :(

thats awful:mad:

But unsurprising. Plenty of the less scrupulous types will be cashing in whatever they can find on this trade.

I remember a dealer unloading an artic load of ‘cull’ ewes in Worcester market when prices went daft once before, all very heavily in lamb and with huge bellies.? I was quite pleased when I heard the following week that the inspector at the abattoir that killed them had stamped his feet and that dealer had his money stopped.....on all 300 of them. I doubt he learnt his lesson though. :(

Hardly. That ram topped out at 120kg as a 4 yr old. He was right down the bottom in the shearling ram class at the 3 Counties (the last time I ever showed), as ‘he was too small and would never breed anything’. His progeny won large classes of ram lambs & ewe lambs at the same show, which the same judge described as ‘the only E grade sheep there’. ?
