Why Devon farmers will soon be extinct.

Lot of subs going to slipper farmers and landlords rather than active farmers.

If we insist on importing much of our food it leaves us at the mercy of the exchange rate.

There have been periods (i.e. 1930s) where a lot of land was taken out of production and became almost worthless. In some areas of some countries places people just packed their things and walked away leaving the keys in the door.

Really doesn't take much for things to go rather pear-shaped, the powers that be are so detached from the practicalities of food production they simply can't conceive of shortage or price spikes. If you look at the history of human civilisations and cut out all the religion, politics and megalomania, every single one has risen or fallen on the availability of or need to source food.

We can do without teachers, doctors scientists but when it cuts to the chase the only people we cannot do without are those who grow our food. That the western world treats it's food providers with such disregard or even contempt is an indictment on our society.

so the subsidy system has already failed then:scratchhead::scratchhead::scratchhead::scratchhead:

No the sub system keeps UK farmers in the industry producing food that the nation needs, without the subs then most farmers will be forced out and we will rely on imports to feed us.

Look at the thread in the dairy section about the payment for small dairy farmers, you lot are falling over your selfs to claim it.. ( and dairy is the most profitable section of the ENTIRE UK AG sector ) you really couldn't make it up!!

You sure about that? I thought Poultry sector had the highest incomes from Defra figures. Ironic that they get no direct subsidies although it could be argued that they benefit from U.K. grain that is grown with the benefit of support.

Not really, don't like subs, don't get any and no longer farm so I can take a detached view of it all. Perhaps taking my nose off the grindstone has allowed me a wider perspective allbeit through ag coloured glasses. I grow as much of my own food as I can so whatever happens won't affect me much either way.

What I am saying is in the likely event that subs go then there is going to be a lot of upheaval before things are sorted out, just some are so wedded to the status quo they can't seem to conceive of anything else, some can't are trapped, can't afford to keep going and can't afford to sell up. If I was still farming I'd be preparing my business for a no sub future, treating the subs as a bonus to help prepare for that future. As I have the time to chat and still have some involvement in the industry I can talk and more importantly listen to what people running businesses with connections to ag. are saying and frankly the picture is not good. The failure of grain companies and meat companies are symptomatic and the effects of them defaulting on payments for grain and livestock have a domino effect and in turn put pressure on their suppliers and so the infection spreads. Some can absorb the losses, some can't

How much do you get or will be ,Welsh SFP is being cut right back

My 'Welsh SFP' will be remaining about the same. Those that have been doing very nicely for the last decade, and debatably stifling new entrants, will see cuts as we all come down to one level. English farmers had the same thing a decade ago, some might suggest that you've had an extra ten years to sit in your gold lined slippers.;)
