Why do we import Bacon

Then machinery, electrical goods, cars, clothes, fuel etc would all increase in price.

No government will risk upsetting the general public in order to save a few pig or beef farmers.

If we value cheap food and white goods over the value of our environment and the future of the planet we are in a LOT of trouble

This has to change and if that means things get expensive then so be it

I would argue EVERYTHING is far too cheap now, maybe if everything cost more we would all consider much more carefully what we ACTUALLY need ?

A friend of mine has one of those street food wagons - really popular but sources all his ingredients as cheap as. The chicken is all from Belgium/Netherlands/Thailand. People love it, he makes a fortune. The chicken looks great but the thought of the life of this foreign poultry just to fulfill our demands for cheap food. I find myself quizing these food sellers on sourcing the ingredients. Bit like farmers markets now. Not a lot of UK sourced material to make all these processed goods. The idea of food has become the art of presentation and price over the chain and quality.

Everything is too cheap apart from houses and cars.

I don't disagree that things need to change on an environmental front, but people will generally take the easy and less expensive options.

Cars are far too cheap given they are one of the biggest environmental vandals ........ houses as well

if EVERYTHING cost more we would consider need much more carefully and recycle / reuse / extend lifecycle more

It's going to take tax / law / government to make this happen as despite everyone saying they want change and the environment should be priority it certainly isn't current reality and we are pretty much ALL hypocrites

Stayed on a Danish pig farm as a kid, could I get bacon for breakfast ? No, but as a special treat we got bacon the last morning, it was horrible, everything vaguely decent went for export.

Agreed. Far too many things are bought and either not used, thrown away or such. Just not valued. Take free upgrades on phones, or fashion as mentioned earlier. Even the rise in 4x4 vehicles for most families, and increased fuel consumption as a result. Plenty of money (invisibly!) wasted in many different ways trying to keep up with the latest x, y or z. How many items are replaced not because they are broken, but just because they think they need the next bigger/better option.

The increasing cost of labour hasn't helped matters - a broken washing machine now would be a min. £100 callout to even look at it, before parts/labour to fix it.

I take chicken muck from two poultry farms .
I use that instead of bought in fertilizers
Just got me thinking , why dont our arable farms keep poultry and do the same, instead of importing chicken
Which shows a case of double standards.

The electorate aren’t as keen on environmental issues as they like to claim. They want it.....but won’t put their hand in their pocket as they believe it’s for the government to sort.

It’s all about exporting labour cost, safety etc as well as pollution. The public don’t really care.....out of sight, out of mind.

I know what ur saying when I see the amount of plastic tat toys my kids get. There is a lot of wastage but if u said to low earners who are struggling that everything needs to get more expensive then they might not be too impressed. No doubt someone will know tell me that it’s their own fault their on the bread line better off on the dole and so on

oh i did - as I say I don't think we should import / export cereals either unless local / domestic is not available

we are screwing up this planet rather nicely with this nonsense

Maybe it would be a good lesson in producing goods / food etc for available markets vs just producing regardless

simple way to do this is put Huge tax on fuel for shipping and airfreight etc
Donald won't like that.

No if it was choice then why cant I buy a Hormone implanted Steak from the USA
Of course you can, just go to a country that has them available, I'd have thought that obvious. Or wait 6 months and they might be available here.

What I was referring to in my previous reply was that it's a matter of choice as to which car you bought.

You choose to buy a German vehicle, so you buy it. People buy imported bacon because they choose to (most likely based on price), and it's available. So why not?

You must live in a different world than I do.

Most working class families that I know spend the vast majority of their income on their homes and cars, meaning food has to be bought on a fairly strict budget, and they have little spare income and most don't save very much if any.

If you are going to make cars, houses, white goods and food cheaper, how much are wages going to have to increase?

IMO houses take up too much of a share of monthly income for people to be able to afford to make choices in how they shop.

I don't think cars are too cheap, but fuel and road usage should be a lot more expensive in order to discourage driving unless necessary. Road tax should be based on mileage.
