Theoretically the most efficient would be having permanent understories that converted into ready made covers immediately after harvest, and were then drilled directly into at some point either in the autumn or the next spring.
Theoretically but my worry would be if permanent understorey was a single species then you would build up soil disease for that understorey. Rotating them would be better but more expensive.

I enjoyed it. Pretty much agreed with all of it.

The only thing you could start to ask about is in the bit about moving from a sustainable to a regenerative agriculture is still viewed through the prism of the farm being an "arable farm" ie growing annual crops every year whereas the wider view of what is truly regenerative may involve perennials, wood-pasture, animals etc.

I suppose I'm asking where does a farmer go next in search of more resilient, flexible and regenerative agriculture techniques? Maybe something for a rainy day!

Agroforestry? ROws of fruit trees and hard woods with 24m strips of crops?

Nice report. Personally, I was very happy to be reminded why we went no-till!
Some good quotes: 'Everybody copies and nobody thinks' and 'sustainable maintains, whilst regeneration improves'. Agree with above posts that the report started a bit more radical than it ended. I suppose this is what happens if you think instead of copying...

Short rotation coppice or similar, wood chip for grain drying heating buildings/houses all adding to the whole farm margin per Ha.
Was thinking about it yesterday while drilling, A to B was set bang on N to S, was interesting to observe the shadow of the tractor throughout the day.
