Winter barley - what is this?

Thinking back, I do recall seeing very rare ones last year.

The tecnical name of this desease is " Ustilago sp.". You can search it on the internet

yup and or saving your seed from new seed from the year before. we had starting to come into spring barley a few years ago, gone too many years from ffs, so bought 1 bag of new seed now and farm save seed from there.

Loose smut. We had more last year in a bag of bought in winter barley seed that we got to update variety than in my farm saved stuff. So stuck with what we saved again and got another new bag for this year.

Did you not get it tested? I assume you can test for loose smut.

Defo Loose Smut.
Years ago, a lot of Fench bred varieties used to get it here. To prevent it, we used to use Baytan seed dressing.
Do not use FSS from that unless you can seed dress it with something that will cure it.
If you try to FSS that this year, the whole lot will be like it next year.

I want to change barley variety this coming year, so won’t be saving this. It is however next to my triticale, a variety I am very happy with, so I guess I will need to get that tested (and the soisant wheat the other side of triticale)

Why don't you buy a few cwt of c1 then , I know everyone fss in france , but this is how disease builds ...

Yep alsways did that in the uk.
Was a proper cereal grower in the uk though, just a hobby here alongside cows

I have two varieties, I’m not sure which half that picture was from. One is cassia. The other is presumably French
Something like “orgue”

Edit. Just seen zippies post, maybe the cassia is prone, be interesting to see if the two are different.
The French variety (the reason for not liking it) is stupidly early and clashes with hay making, and nearly two weeks ahead of the cassia.
