Winter Beans

I’m thinking that rather than a disc drill, a Horsch with Metcalfe points is the best way to go (if like me, you have no Claydon) and I know where there is one I could use.

yes 👍 but be aware the standard metcalfe coulter is a bit narrow and can block of bean seed is big ime - we made winder ones to fix this and i think metcalfe may sell a wider one now as well

I wouldn’t get too hung up on variety, just look at the PGRO list and get high yielding with decent mildew score. That said we grew a seed crop of Vincent last year which did well and nice big beans compared to others for the year. You want to aim for around 20 plants/m2 established so drill around 25 to give yourself some wiggle room. I’d personally rather drill than plough. They’re not a crop for wet ground.

This. The existence of Tundra and Vespa has made no difference whatsoever to the average bean yield in this country. Stick to whatever you have in the shed.

Think this ‘cropped’ up in another thread. They’re fine when they’re new but as they wear the burr makes the hole smaller. I’m on my 4th year of the seed tubes and have gone from no bungs to an odd one; usually on the coulters behind the wheels which have more worn seed tubes. A file soon sorts them out. Good coulters if the year is with you; have done 5.5t/ha with them drilled at 250/ha. But I’ve also done 2.5 🫣

Winter beans coming off @4 .5 t ha . December drilled with sumo drill the nice neighbour that used to drill with his claydon for us sold it ( Bugger ) .
Which Sumo drill? DTS?

Have you got an old Shakerator in the nettles? I've seen some good home made bean/osr drills made with an old drill hopper on the back. Just run the seed down the back of the legs.

Does your nice neighbour still grow winter beans?

My Agronomist is recommending Nirvana herbicide and managed to book us some.
Is it any good in a Blackgrass situation?

Is the PDM within it strong enough or like my whisky, a large(r) one always works better?

beans have been classified as a major crop and as such all eamus removed…

That was where I was coming to personally I wouldn’t be relying on nirvana for bg control
Thanks. It was legal when I used it...

Nirvana has imazamox which is good on broad leafed weeds. If you have a charlock problem this is a must, but will use up any profit you might have otherwise made on the crop 😉

Don.t think they do grow them no the nice neighbouring manager moved and they sold their claydon . Beans have done ok this year as they were on chaulky soils recon on around 150 tons of 32 ha by calling all 12 ton capacity trailers at 10 ton of beans .

Yes a dilemma, until you add in the consequential uplift of the following crop.
However, this is a one off for us until next year when AB6 will take the place of all break-crops unless there is a serious uplift in their yields and prices.
