Hello I am a 16 year old student about to start my A Levels i am looking to gain some valuable work experience and offer my services in a farm/dairy environment in the summer holidays or October half term 2022.Thankyou any help or replies are very appreciated.

Poppy, good luck, I hope you find somewhere. Farmers are always complaining about lack of workers but some are not good at giving novices a chance. It would help to find a placement if you mentioned your location.

Hope you find somewhere, and good on you for putting yourself out there.

From an employer point of view, employing under 18’s is not straightforward. I looked at it last year for a “pre-apprentice” (16-17yr old) and the hse and insurance implications made it pretty unattractive. Basically they would need a chaperone at all times, limited on what they were allowed to do, how many hours could be worked etc.

I don’t mean to be pessimistic, but there are those factors to be taken into account, so don’t get too disheartened if you don’t find something quickly. It could be different in the livestock sector where you could tag along with someone and be a 2nd pair of hands.
