Do these people not know any other technique than flat out? He had a bloody Case Magnum on the front... wouldn't bottom gear and idle revs have had pretty much the same if not more pull?

That was here in the states, very fortunate JD driver. Those blue cords are the berries for pulling mired equipment, IF USED CORRECTLY. You never ever and I mean Never hook those cords together with chain, and ALWAYS use a screw clevis to connect either end. I feel safe to say those guys failed in one of those areas.
Some people won't agree but neither do you have to start out with such a jerk either.
