** DRUM ROLL **

fieldmargin for iPhone is now finally in the app store! (The android version should be ready in about a month.)

We’d love all TFF members to have a look and let us know what you think. Chats on the forum and through DM have been hugely valuable to get us to where we are.

In the coming months, we’ll be adding new tools and features to the app based on the feedback we receive to make sure that fieldmargin becomes an essential part of every farming toolkit.

This app is for all farmers; arable, grassland, dairy and livestock, anyone that manages land.

Share notes with people across your farm, add features to build up a unique working map of your farm, works even without signal.

Please let me know if I can be of any help at all.

Either search ‘fieldmargin’ in the App Store or click here.

Sounds and looks very interesting. Something I've always wanted and wondered, Is it possible to drop numerous pins on exact locations to pin point drains in the centre of fields for future reference? I'm forever repairing drains and it would be extremely handy to have saved points of exact drain location with notes of connections when I repair or re connect to existing drains so I know the exact distance and location before I start in future. It would take years for me to build up a full mapped drain system (because it's already there so would only be able to drop pins on future excavations) but the last few years I've opened up a rediculous amount and regret not having precise locations. I've taken pics pointing at trees etc so I've got a rough idea but a map with numerous pin points would be brilliant.

Hey @Valtra Man - this is an exact example we have on the office wall. Modern phones are accurate to a metre or two (you can move the pin on the map by hand if, for instance, you want to line up with a tramline that you can see in the satellite imagery to improve accuracy) which should certainly save a fair bit of digging in the future! You can also draw straight lines between points if you know where the drains run.

We have made "Notes" for day-to-day notes of things that change and "Features" for permanent things like drains, fields shallow rocks or ditches.

So yes - a map with lots of pins labelled up is exactly what we're starting with. Any feedback whatsoever is going to help us!

Is it free ?

YEP!

As I said - we want to become brilliant. We want to save time and money. We want to be something people would gladly pay for.

We are 'pretty cool' right now but not 'indispensable'.

Once we can demonstrate that sort of value we will probably introduce a premium paid service. Those premium services could be things like daily refreshed satellite images, links to machinery or other software, a farm office PC version - that sort of thing.
Charging will be fair and based on the size of the farm you run.

We will never charge for any of the functionality you see today and the app will always be free to download and use. Your data will always be your data and you'll be able to download and take it with you should you decide not to use fieldmargin any more.

That sounds perfect. I'll most certainly give it a go and let you know my findings.

I like the sound of this a lot.

but we have windows phones, any plans?

I never say never *but* Window phones are now less than 1% of the market - looks like they'll not make them for long - rumours are that new phones made by Windows/Nokia will be Android. I think 'unlikely' might be my most diplomatic answer here... sorry, that's not very good news is it?

We will have something for computer web browsers but that will require an internet connection.

Fantastic - downloaded it - great for letting contractors know where you need the work doing

Only one question - can you edit and delete notes ?

Download but fell at first hurdle !

How do you map your farm boundary when you have multiple blocks of land broken up and geographical spread over a large radius ?

Seems designed for a small ring fenced unit (rare these days )

Hi @Clive !

Agreed, that part is not clear enough. Will be updated soon. The initial draw piece is to choose the area of land you'd like to be visible on the phone when you can't connect to internet/phone signal. Just go round the whole lot - it doesn't have to be accurate.
Thanks for the feedback - keep it coming!

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
