Did you try to retighten, before stripping down?

12 thou (12 x 2.5 = 0.3mm) in everything as my old boss would say

Just check the head and block with the back of a hacksaw blade (as a straightedge) and a set of feeler gauges, see can you get them to slip between blade and block / head. After cleaning both surfaced to within an inch of their lives. You'll be happier putting it back knowing its checked.

Thanks, it's tomorrow's project. First time doing replacing a head gasket , hope I don't make it worse.

Do you know if the head bolts were replaced last time? If not, it might be worth getting new ones as they could have stretched and won’t hold the head down even at the right torque

I don't see a blow between the water gallery and cylinder on this one.Could be a different place on another..Considering you think(or know) the head bolts weren't correctly torqued from before,if it was me.I'd be removing the other heads too and replacing the 4 gaskets. Keep the manifolds on and lift all off in one go. Check heads and block with a straight edge.If you do decide to skim, you may well need thicker gaskets depending on how much is taken off.

Thanks. That's what I was thinking too. More work for me then. The previous guys put some sort of copper gasket type crap on it, don't know if that was the correct thing to do?

If the surfaces are perfectly clean and flat, gasket sealant shouldn't be required. I would never use it on a head. Dad always used to smear ordinary grease on head and block but it was just so the used gasket would lift off easily again if he had to go in there again!!

Might be copper grease from the threads?
If you wanted to fill the block with water to see if it runs out the sump plug, before taking the other heads off?
Diesel would be better to find the leak but you know best .........

Was the crown of the piston spotless (no carbon) indicating it was getting water / coolant while running?
