I’m 6-2 and built for comfort not speed [emoji849], we have a 13plate hard top defender, seats right back and knees are brushing the steering wheel, right elbow digs into ribs if window not open, getting in and out forever catching belt loops on the bloody door catch, coming out of a junction if it’s the slightest acute angle to the left not a hope in hell seeing if anything is coming as no little quarter light window like the pickup style have had to replace door catch on drivers door and back door also the drivers door panel has self destructed [emoji57] good old British engineering [emoji849]turbo boost pipe split twice

We had seven defenders over the years and we still have a 90 truck cab running on red. I thought they were great at the time but since moving to a jap pickup there's no way I'd want another Defender as the main farm vehicle and tbh why would I want to spend 40k on something totally unsuitable when I can buy a nice spec pickup for under 20? They can stuff their new 'Defender' where the sun don't shine as far as I'm concerned.

I doubt the new Defender was ever aimed at us....a very small bunch of people in a specialist profession, on a small island.

True but if you incuded all the utility companies, military, forestry etc etc I think they're missing out on a huge market. Our local Scottish Power depot used to run about a dozen Defenders. All Hilux's now.

Ford sell between 900,000 and 1 million new F150 pickups every year. If Land Rover went after just 10% of that market volume, shared around all markets, to justify production of a proper pickup truck, it would probably be their best selling vehicle by far. Some of the Jaguar models sell near to bugger-all in relative terms.

People here end to think that the pickup market is a small one. Its actually a massive and very profitable worldwide market.

Land Rover may feel like a large manufacturer when we are comparatively surrounded by their products, in reality they are a minnow in global terms, and perhaps haven't the appetite or the cash to gear up for truly large scale production.
Land Rover sales have indeed very successfully grown to circa 440000 per annum, but by comparison VW sold around 10.9 MILLION in the same time frame.

They have increased total production of LR vehicles impressively in recent years. Its just that they don't have the appetite to stay with their roots, and it certainly isn't because the market is not there. They have in fact given that section of their market, a section where they were once up there with the top dogs, given it away free to rivals who, I'm sure, are very grateful and running with glee with the proceeds into their bank accounts. The roads around here are teeming with 1 ton pickup trucks where once they were teeming with Defenders and Daihatsus

£40,159.60 was the price I got last week for a new Amarok V6 which wasn’t exactly loaded with extras,I thought that was outrageous money personally for what it was
You would have just been paying for the name same as with the Merc. You could pick up a nice spec Isuzu, Nissan or Mitsubishi for half that and they are all good trucks. In reality they're more practical as a work truck than the VW in any case. A Ford or Toyota would probably be about 5k more and it's pretty debatable if they are worth the extra too.

Do all these pick ups run leaf springs on the back? I took people in the back of the VW and both said it wasn’t the greatest of rides

Chap down this way bought new jap truck last year and diff failed after 3 months took it back to dealer and they told him it wasn’t covered under warranty as he’d taken it off road in conditions it wasn’t designed for. Was only when he told them he wanted his money and old truck back then as they’d mis-sold him then new one they changed their mind.

Err, I owned & have a fair bit of experience in others 30 yr old 4wd Hiluxes

They were without doubt the weirdest seating position, most godawful uncomfortable vehicle I have ever been in. This is from someone who has driven HJ series Toyotas ever since . . .
Yes, the old hiluxs had many fine attributes ( not that we had many other choices if we needed a 4wd ute back then. LR too slow on open roads. It was Hilux, Landcruiser or Patrol really ) but comfort most definitely wasn't one of them. Especially when coming out of the 2wd Aussie Utes in comparison . . .

So, who is the new discovery aimed at, looks like the range rover to me but slightly cheaper, anyway with a 1000 jobs just been axed, they are blaming diesel, probably more like to over priced, sorry for value for money a top spec pick-up has everything you need at a lot less money and a lot more comfortable, sorry @Cowabunga your wrong again here.:D
