I would agree with you to a degree but we have too much politics and many times too many politicians. Most of our MEPs are UKIP so that should indicate the state of play. Reports back indicate that this is a hopeless body which gives us no tangible power in return for a massive net input.But we the public are (have been) guilty of being bone idle where the EU has been concerned. MEP's are voted in on minuscule turnouts, most folk don't even know or care who they are, let alone challenge them about what they are actually doing in Brussels for the benefit UK. And yet they make big decisions that affect us all.
