like many others we have wet straw laying out waiting to dry, happened to go up to Louth last week and there are thousands of acres of straw in the swath wet through. Presume this has already been sold at sky high prices, but are these buyers now going to back out as a) it’s going to need turning b) it’s now gone black c) it’s worth a lot less than it was at the start of harvest d) farmers are going to start wanting it shifting ASAP

Welchers as far as the eye can see

You better hope it don't drop to much or you will pay a dear price next harvest

A good third of the straw price is haulage over here and that won't drop

I know it's easy for me to talk, sitting here in the middle of a big arable area, but is straw supply going to be as short as everybody thinks?
There's straw bales everywhere round here and, admittedly as the OP says, a fair bit left in trails and some still to be combined. Last weekend we drove from here down to Bedfordshire for our lad's wedding and saw a hell of a lot of straw in bales.
Just a casual observation - doesn't bother me one way or t'other, we've got what bit we need.

I suspect supply is well up this year, with arable farmers as a whole selling more straw. Appart from one field of OSR straw, all our straw has been sold and for the most part straw yields have been good. The big variable is demand and for the livestock farmers that will depend on the weather this coming autumn, winter and spring.

Spoke to a local dealer this morning, reckons trade has dropped a bit and buyers have backed out of deals. He still has some straw in stacks on some of our soon-to-be osr - farmer had what he wanted and has now declined the rest of it

Most if that straw up there goes to the local Power Station

I think there's a lot of straw been baled, but still wheat to cut in the north of England. Weather conditions over this next couple of weeks will determine if it gets chopped or not, and hence could influence the supply and demand balance.

IF buyers are welching left, right and centre, will even more straw than normal be chopped next year? If I was a big arable farmer that had sold straw in the swath for the first time in years, then the buyer/dealer backed out and left me with a soggy swath, i’d Likely weld the chopper to the back of the combine to stop me being tempted again.

Does nobody stand by their word any more?:(

As an indicator of demand, the arable man who kindly sells us straw in the swath, plus a few other livestock neighbours, said all of his customers wanted more 10-20% this year (ourselves included). They are all end users not dealers or merchants.
