I dont agree

If its top class flexible land which can achieve higher yields
then it would be as profitable as renting double the acreage of run of the mill land.
If on the other hand its worn out and wet problematic land then best left well alone.
Perhaps if it can grow potatoes etc for rent. But for combineable land there may we’ll be profit there but he needs to think about the bigger picture. Think about return capital.

This is why it is not such an easy decision for me, it’s very good land and if farmed well it is sure to profitable. The business I’m part of has 3 families to take care of so while the current 3000 acres is a lot it’s not as though more income would be unwelcome and how often do these opportunities pop up?!

I think your local circumstances are biasing your opinion thats not the case everywhere, for instance around me there are only 4 (inc myself) contract farming, unfortunately, as unlike your area, not much around here are CFA's
Apologies if that comes across patronising, it's not meant to be

I’d better throw the net out then!

I think you've answered your own question
You snooze:sleep: you lose:(

Land 40 miles south of me is a week earlier for all operations
Being no till helps a lot
One crop would be easy to decide
I have land spread 28 miles apart in half of years some land work can be done when we cannot move at home
It has also allowed me not to do jobs when it is too wet
We have farmed the land away since grand father retired
As a youngster moving a 10 ft combine header attached cushion in the tank acting as spotter for cars behind was the first road trip in the 1960s
Learning the logistics from a young age makes it more manageable some farms cannot cope with a field in the next parish

We farm 300 acres 70 miles from where I'm sat, everything there, simple rotation.

Furthest we go in a tractor is about three miles, travel at night and accommodation there. Spray days need choosing in advance, and breakdowns can't happen!

Financially it's madness, but then again so was the cfa that existed there before.

You’ve definitely answered your own question - 3000 acres and 3 families? It may well need to be double that in 10 years time - use your friend’s as a staging post for future business expansion and build critical mass over there - push on!!!

What profit will you make in real terms from the CFA?

Looking forward its pretty obvious that if farming is your business and you and followers want to continue land is going to be farmed by less and less numbers of active farmers. So if your in a position to take on good land in a reasonable sized block which as 400 acres is cant see why not its just management? planning. An hour in a vehicle is less than most folks commute.
