Coronavirus... Who's telling the truth?!

On the one hand, lockdowns, lack of supplies, people off work, massive media coverage, army drafted in, fights cancelled etc etc

On the other hand, its just flu, it's killed a few, but nothing compared to 'normal' flu. Get on with your life but don't cough at people. Media hype, blown out of all proportion.

So... who's telling the truth? What or who should I believe?

A very good question and one i would like to know the truth of.It doesnt stack up to me.China would have had millions of deaths by now if it is as bad as the forecasts.

My feeling is its not the fatality rate thats concerning the authorities, though thats bad enough, it is considerably worse than normal flu. I think its the transmission rate thats causing them to worry. If a disease kills 1% of those infected, then if only a few tens or hundreds of thousands get infected then there won't be many deaths, and more importantly there won't be economic disruption. If on the other hand millions get infected then there will be a LOT of deaths and worse than that (from a 'making sure society continues to function' perspective) millions will be off work. Potentially meaning services start to collapse, which could then have severe domino knock on effects.

SARS was a more deadly disease than the coronavirus but transmission was harder, so the overall impact was minor. This one seems to be very infectious, so the likelihood of millions being sick at the same time has got to be considerably higher.

Off work, and potentially inundating the NHS. That's the govts main worry I believe.

I’m surprised the media isn’t full of survivors telling their story of how bad the virus has affected them. Or stories from people who have lost relatives.
I have seen one woman in China who described the symptoms she suffered. Also read a report that said the critically ill can be hospitalised for 3-6 weeks. That’s got to be a huge worry for the NHS. China was able to pull in 40k nurses from other areas to help treat in Wuhan can’t see that happening here! Large numbers needing ventilators and O2 will stretch things too.

Also you would think that if transmission is so easy that whole families would go down with it pretty much across the board, if one person brings it home and symptoms don’t show for a few days you would think the home environment would be a strong place for spread?

Just up.the road from where we are is where the guy that brought it from Singapore was staying in a chalet, he gave it to a father and son, but no others there caught it nor any kids in the two schools the boy was at, he then flew back( I assume he flew) to the uk and no one on the plane caught it but someone in Brighton did from him so it cant be that easy to catch or it is but in most symptoms are so minor that it is like a cold

To the OP I don't know but I'm worried. I'll take my chances but my Aunt in a care home is a sitting duck along with the other vulnerable residents. We had a small scare at their GP's own practice in Bacton last week where it was closed temporarily after a confirmed case

The only thing the home can do is ask all visitors to wash their hands but that seems too little considering the situation and I was asking the Manager if they should deter visitors for the time being

Oh how an old man thinks!
would I be better to go seek out the infection immediatly so when Iam ill there will be someone to look after me, rather than waiting for everybody to get infected and nobody to look after me.!!!!!!
no,no. the idea is us old buggers get it and die quickly thus saving the gubermint pension payments and the ongoing cost of treating us for all the other ailments the elderly get. :(
