Heard on the radio this morning that military planners are looking for another 10 such sites to turn into temporary hospitals.

Where are all the staff going to come from?

There wont be enough medical trained personnel (civilian or military) to staff 10 new 4,000 bed hospitals...?
I’d imagine with these hospitals specialising in a single disease it’s easier to train up staff quickly. I’d imagine they will follow a fairly standard procedure by and large for most cases. I can’t see how else they can do it with the numbers involved. A one size fits all treatment plan that will benefit the majority.

@Pieces_of_Eight It is as described above; additionally the normal supervisory requirements are slackened, meaning that all from a consultant to a senior nurse can supervise more beneath them. This may not seem much, but just a small decrease in the necessary staffing rations can make a great difference to the number of patients that can be adequately treated.

The Army medics have a system that caters for a more short term but similarly urgent spike, theirs being in battle casualties as an attack proceeds. At that point, instead of the ideal numbers of staff being around every existing patient, more 'beds' are set up and attending staff reduced to a minimum to free them up to cope with the expected surge. There are 'floating' staff to deal with emergencies already present, but experience has demonstrated that full-on care can be dispensed with for a period due to the presence of the 'floating' team, since it's unlikely that existing patients will all have emergencies simultaneously.

I've no doubt there is a very short name for this system, but I've only seen it as an outsider, so explain it as I've seen it.

I read somewhere that they had received 400,000 offers to volunteer (y)
Have to admit though, if I’m being ventilated, I’d rather the staff had some experience. Beggars can’t be choosers.
The volunteers are for non clinical roles. over half a million now.

And how heart warming is that that so many are prepared to volunteer at a time of crisis especially as the risks to their health are not miniscule

In France have they an applause for the health workers campaign? Our's is at 8pm tonight.

I've seen the Spanish, Dutch and Italian ones on videos and it is very moving and heart flet.

Even I'm a lone wally in a country garden I am hoping it's a still night and some of the health workers' families in the village hear us
All our 2 'villages' are doing it, houses very strung out but still worth doing.

Which makes me wonder if the NHS will ever be the same again.

I know other parts of our lives will change forever once Covid is put behind us.

Well Dyson is knocking up 10,000 ventilators.
As earlier there are military plans for field hospitals across the country, Stamford Hall at the defence rehab centre is often mooted around these parts.
Amazing effort from the volunteers and communities across the country in so many ways.
It`s all rather humbling to be honest, I hope the country comes out of this more considerate and united.

There are lots of exhibition halls across the country that could be used as hospitals, the NEC for a good start, I wonder how many that could hold?

I wish I could get out and volunteer but we are over 70 and in isolation!!

Will they be here in time for the peak

The "plan" is to avoid a large peak, more a long gradual slope so the answer would be possibly. Lots of testing etc to go through unless another approved manufacturer has shared designs, which is possible.

Coal face news in Leicester..... 40 confirmed CoV-19 cases, 9 deaths.

Whole street was out last night at 8.00pm, I got dust in my eyes.

They say up too 60%, whoever they are , could have had it and dont know . But a lot of those would be family members so surly they would suspect they had had it . Its very unlikely i have had it and not infected my family who have not had any symtoms either

I think the figure mentioned was 40 % and a milder form IIRC. I keep saying when you have so many "famous" people being confirmed with it many many more must have had it, when the test for the antibodies is widely available it will be possible to make a decent estimate of those who have had it, if its above 50% by May then life can begin to return to the new normal, the vulnerable will still need to be isolated unless they test positive but at least if family members can show immunity they can visit using sensible precautions
