I’ve 18 days untaken holiday which I’ve no way of taking before the end of December , what does everyone do regarding untaken holiday entitlement ?
Ask your boss what they are going to do about it. If they say nothing, it's your fault, book all next years holidays in on the 1st of January.
Unless you don't care that you are working for free, then don't worry about it. (y)

With the caveat that employers can stipulate that annual leave cannot/may not be taken at a busy time of year. We state March in our employees' written statement of employment particulars.

It's use it or lose it, I don't think the employer can buy it off you. But with enough notice you should be able to take it. We try to encourage employees to mark their weeks off in the calendar at the beginning of each holiday year, even if they are shuffled around afterwards.
Just curious, do you have use it or lose it written in their contract?
I've no problem with blocking out times that they can't have holidays, but I think when they are close to running out of time to use them a quick chat about the subject is a good idea.

I’m on a salary I don’t see how I’m working for free I’m paid regardless
Your salary is for the working year, i.e. 48 weeks work and 4 weeks holiday (or whatever your employment contract specified for your holiday entitlement). If you are actually working those days when you are supposed to be on holiday, then you are effectively doing 18 days unpaid overtime. An odd day is give and take, particularly if you enjoy your job and everything else is good, but 18 days is a lot. How much is that pro rata? Even if you are only on the equivalent of say £100 per day, then that is £1800 worth of time. That is what it would cost your boss to get someone to cover for you if you were taking the holidays you are entitled to. That is also what you could be earning as a bonus if you used your days off to work elsewhere. You are losing out and your boss is saving significantly by you not taking your holidays. Everyone needs a break now and then. You do need to try and sort this and should be taking your holidays. 🫤

I’d just like to say this is in no way a moan I’m happy with my job an my employer I was just asking what others do ie do you get paid for unused holiday , lose it or take it or perhaps they roll it over to next year , I’m well aware of the fact it’s my bosses job to arrange cover and im also aware it’s my duty to book holiday but sometimes it’s not as simple as that especially when livestocks involved.
Hardly much point in rolling it over is it....

I believe a lot of Organisation state that they are unable to pay out for worked Holiday time. But surely, that should be between emloyer and employee?

Not if it is the employer making it difficult/Impossible for the employee to take the holidays they are entitled to. When I was in a similar situation, every time I asked for time off, there was always a reason why that day wasn't convenient. When I did take time off, nothing was done to cover for any of my work. I came back and had to catch up on everything that had built up while I was off. We were working flat out as it was and in the end it was easier not to take time off, but that is/was wrong on so many levels. Employers should not take advantage of conscientious employees. 😟

What does your contact say, mine says I won’t get paid or be able the carry forward. I like you i don’t really have anyone to cover, manager will do the basic checking but couldn’t be relied on to sort problems, so iv checked stock most days and take the rest of the day off to do my own farm work or contracting for the estate (shearing, hay or fencing).
