This topic will be under discussion in the fourth in the series of Arable Conversations at this year’s Arable Scotland event on 29 June at 6pm.
Chairing the discussion on ‘Net Zero Making Carbon Pay’, will be Dr Kenneth Loades from the James Hutton Institute, he is also the sector lead for soils and crops...

In this video, John Pawsey describes the agroforestry at Shimpling Park Farm. In December 2020 they planted 3 fields totalling about 50 acres with 3,500 trees that mimic the species in the adjacent SSSI woodland and are ideally suited for the farm soil type. Between the trees they are growing organic arable crops (cereals and pulses) and plan to also graze their sheep. The trees are planted in lines in the fields at 36m intervals, with 4m wide alleys. John talks about what inspired him, the reasons behind some of the practical decisions, how they plan to use and manage the trees and expected benefits; for livestock, people, wildlife and the environment. This was made for ‘A National Network of Agroforestry Farms, ’a 'Farming the Future' A Team...

Hi, probably a bit of a long shot but does anyone have any jobs going around Bridlington area (I can drive and do have a car so anywhere within a reasonable distance)?
Also, does anyone have any tips on the best way to contact farmers for work (I have no experience at work in this field but really want to get involved)? Should I write a letter, email, ring them up or just go to the farm and hope to speak to the right person?
TIA
I’m looking for some part time farm/harvest work if at all possible. I’ll be honest and admit that I’m very green to arable farm work, but would love the experience - Grain Carting or anything really.
I’ve driven New Holland T5 and T7 tractors as well as a John Deere 6155r along with a 30m sprayer. I also hold a Class 2 HGV Licence plus ADR (inc. Tanks) as I used to drive fuel bowsers to refuel aircraft.
Although as mentioned my arable experience is limited, I have worked on a farm as a milker of 220 cows.
I currently live on the Oxfordshire / Buckinghamshire border (6 miles from Oxford), but am frequently back “home” in the Midlands around Tamworth so either place would be great.
I appreciate it’s probably a long-shot, but I would love to get involved. Long hours don’t...
Maintaining grass quality during mid-season grazing is important. Farmers can maintain quality by entering ideal grazing covers of 1,300 – 1,500kg DM/ha, and grazing down to a residual of 4cm every rotation.
If you are now in a situation where cows are not cleaning out paddocks as well as they should be, leading to the development of steamy grass within the sward, here are some options.
Common options for rejuvenating swards include:
Take a silage cut, probably into bales, remove the material and start again with the aftermath...
Lambing season has started!... it's actually ended but life got hectic & sadly video making got pushed to one side, here's my girl lambing it's her second year of lambing & she was brilliant but I want to show everyone our lambing routine.
