Since 2017, ADAS Crop Physiologist Sarah Kendall, Manterra Ltd., and Southwell & Knapton Farm in Yorkshire have been working on an EIP-AGRI funded project called 'Drill for Yield'. We are trying to understand if drone data can be used to predict shoot number and ultimately used as the basis for variable seed rate maps. Here is our summary of how the project is going ☺

Harvest 2020 Angley Farm Kent

Situation Vacant Junior/assistant heardsperson.

Due to a key playing member of staff having to take time off for an operation and recovery, I am in the need of a member of staff. I currently do a large portion of the milking, but am looking for someone to fill that role so I can move out onto the yard in my head guys absence. The correct person has the opportunity to progress into a leading role in the dairy heard. As we are a mixed farm operation with plenty of demand on my time else where in the business.
The dairy enterprise is very much in its early stages having only been producing milksince March. The heard currently has 90 cows in milk and is out grazing and currently a all year round calving with a spring and autumn bias, as the heard was bought in calf. Milking numbers should peak around 130.

As it is a mix farming...

With temperatures forecast to rise above 25°C, cattle producers should be prepared to mitigate the negative effects of heat stress on their beef and dairy animals.

“Cattle are fairly comfortable when the ambient temperature is between 15°C and 25°C over the summer months but if the thermometer rises significantly, production performance will start to suffer,” warns Jacob Lakin from Azelis Animal Nutrition.

“This is because both a milk production and growing beef animal will start to divert energy away from production performance towards keeping cool. You’ll notice if a cow is struggling during a summer heatwave because she will start to salivate heavily and pant...

A new rural TV show hopes good farmhouse cooking can help pair up single farmers with potential love matches.

‘Coortin’ In the Kitchen’ is all about hearth and home – farming life, family history, good food, family stories and a deep love of the land.

Leana Arrell, from production company Alleycats which is behind the series, said: “A farming life is full of reward but it’s hard work – long hours don’t help when it comes to romance. What’s more, finding someone who shares the same passion for land and livestock is really important.

In this series we want to be home on the farm with a lovely Ulster farming family – cooking, working and having the banter...

Thinking about making third-cut silage? Here’s a few things to keep in mind…

A lot of second-cut silage has been saved across farms over the last few weeks, as the mixture of warm and, at times, wet weather has allowed for grass growth rates to excel in many places.

Considering the wet spring farmers had to deal with and the drought in May and June, farmers, in many parts of the country, will be tempted to take a third cut of silage, if the opportunity presents itself.

The best thing a farmer can do to see if they require a third-cut of silage is to do up a fodder budget to see what feed supplies are sitting in the yard.

Only then will farmers know if they require extra feed for the winter period. Farmers that take a gamble could be...

The £3m loan was provided to borrowers who run a highly professional and substantial business. This was a complex loan to assess, as there were numerous different assets related to the core poultry business, with the acreage and security split across multiple plots. Cultural techniques could help manage bean seed fly damage

Recent findings from trials carried out by the Processors and Growers Research Organisation (PGRO) has shown that cultural techniques could help to manage seed fly damage. Charlotte Cunningham reports. Bean seed fly (delia platura) is a pest with a wide host range that includes peas and beans, the larvae feeding on imbibing seeds and small seedlings as they emerge. However, initial findings from trial work by PGRO suggests that the period between cultivation and drilling may be more important when managing the damage – rather than the drill type or whether rolling had been undertaken – with maximum damage recorded on the plots that were drilled on the same day as...
