Ethnic minorities in agriculture

Just north of here in Craven Arms is the Muslim owned EQL Abattoir, specialising in Halal slaughter. Took me a while to work out why there are so many folks walking about this small Shropshire border town in full Muslim dress.

Am I missing the point?

They want to be seen as the same as everyone else, which they are in the majority of peoples eyes, human beings like us all, then a few stick a label on themselves?

I wonder how it would be seen if I had a brand called White farmers milk?
And demonstrate to show their different :scratchhead:

There are some very wealthy Italian families that dominate fresh produce growing in the Vale of Evesham / Pershore area. There is also an Asian grower in the Leics area - not sure if he owns land or just rents it, but certainly runs his own business. Before now some rather judgemental passers-by have called police when he has been seen picking in his fields, they thought he was knicking it.

There are some horticultural local food projects in some areas like Bolton where Asians are renting land to grow exotic crops but fairly small scale. Given the number of BAME immigrants whose family have farming roots in Pakistan, India or the Caribbean it is surprising there are not more. Some are very knowledgeable about farming even though they might be driving a taxi, because they still have relatives farming. A taxi driver from Leicester came to pick me up once and almost burst into tears when he smelt our farm smells - it reminded him of his childhood on his grandparents farm.

Depends what you call ethnic. Must be plenty of Scots, Welsh, and Irish farming in England, if not mixed race. And vice versa. Come to that, are there any pure anglo-saxons left? And the name 'anglo-saxon' says a lot, doesn't it?

When they were doing DNA tests on TV, it was really funny when they found the rabid Nationlist had African forefathers! Most of us will be hybrids so no need to be precious about being a pure bred. I'm Irish, French, and German that I know about, probably a lot more I'd rather not know about!

I've Irish blood & I know they suffered racial abuse, but changed name & accent & assilimated quickly & did well (ish)

Yes I seem to remember a programme the aristorcacy have red indian (pocahotos) blood & asian (indian empire) DNA in small amounts when tested.

Thought of another farmer with Polish wife (born here but polish parents)

So yes if people try assilimation is possible in the UK

Dose it matter at all where families may have originated from.
Seems one of my best friend only found out his Polish credentials at his Mothers funeral.
Some new entrants when they acquire property in an area really want to join in, Others think its such a wonderful place to come too, that they then immediately want to change things.Just when you come to an area mix in and help out. Some do come with such "Chips" on there shoulders.
Oh and the best friend, still very welcome in my house and he has farmed all his working life.

Not really sure if it matters what colour, sex or Nationality you are if you want to farm in the UK!! Just go and buy some ground and start farming.

“The black farmer” in Wiltshire.

Great marketing on his behalf and no doubt sold pig loads of 'Black Mans Sausages' due to it. But double standards as we wouldn't be allowed to market produce under the 'White Farmer' brand.

Does being ginger count?

Probably several in Scotland, so probably not so rare as you think.

Now that the media is pulling our history apart, how long will these big Country Estates be under the radar before someone realises that several made their fortunes with sugar plantations and tobacco farms in far away places using slave labour !!

Actually have nothing against peaceful protests.
We all have a right to that.

Desecration of monuments and statues is actually racism against our backgrounds and history. Whether you agree with it or not. Its history, just like guy fawkes on 5th November, even Christmas! That is the celebration of the Birth of Christ and look at the Christian crusades throughout history. Look at the Britsh Empire, maybe we should repatriate all those that were forced to come to the UK, and of course those that were sent away to Australia as convicts. Cut no corners the world should be as it was in....let's pick a date...1600?

We now see TV presenters back peddling as fast as they can to save their asses, next will be hymns and any religious services.

Whole worlds gone PC crazy IMHO.

The whole PC thing really really infuriates me with how far it’s gone..

nobody can rewrite history and often history these things/statues/monuments etc need to be there for history not to have to repeat itself. Are they going to ask for Auschwitz to be taken down? Things like that have been left up to remind the world of humans past atrocities So that history can’t repeat itself again!

Plenty of ethnic meat & veg buyers around the country. I’m not really sure why we’ve never had more Black & Asian farm workers. You’d think farm work would present good opportunities, especially for recent immigrants from rural areas.

On the rare occasion I venture to London I often get into conversation with a minicab driver. When I say I’m a farmer they almost always crack a smile and talk about their dad‘s/uncle’s/cousin’s farm back home in the mother country. I often feel I have more in common with them than any of the City types.
