We’ve been down that road. Did all our silage with a trailed since grandfather started with a single chop on a 35x.

Without too much pressure they were ideal. IE 125-140hp, towing trailers behind, single or 20ft swaths. Small handler on the pit. 3 man team, 30 odd acres/ day.

When it went wrong was when we started pushing the boundaries. 200hp, 30ft swaths, side loading, 60, 70, 80 acres/ day. They just aren’t up to it, it gets to the stage you spend longer fixing them than chopping. Even sharpening is a 15 minute chore and you end up covered in grease. To sharpen and set the Shearbar is 25 mins. With side loading you just don’t get the breaks needed to do it, so you end up with trailers sat about and the whole system coming to a stop.

The Kongskilde 1260 is technically better than a 1060 but they share a surprising number of components. In turn the 1060 shares most of its components with a 900. Our last 1060 was a brand new one, we had to get rid after one season because of poor build quality.

What’s your setup at the moment? If you’re planning to do a fair few acres really do look at a self propelled. If you really want a trailed, a Lely 300 is the one to have if you can find one.

Thanks for your reply I’m old skool as well I’m looking to do a specific job and want to try and keep costs as low as possible. I know a small self propelled will do it but I like to think out of the box and I can’t seem to find any about, there are a couple of manufacturers in Europe who have come up with some innovative solutions.
I’m looking to just slow things down a bit and not tear arse about because the kit has cost 350,000!
