Evening all,

looking to buy sabre tine legs for a project. What are people’s thoughts on them? Do they wear well, reliable into uncultivated ground etc?
cheers 🤙🤙

I like the leg, on the sabre machine it’s not let me down or ridden out on dry going, the more clips I take out then the deeper it’ll go, not so keen on the seed tube from weaving, I’d prefer a slightly longer but narrower tube to give better seed placement and less wear on the tube.

Wear rate I’ll likely get top side of 2000ac out of my set on a 6m drill, I have no nothing to compare it to directly but I’m mostly on Sandy loam with stone so quite abrasive

That’s great, it’s Mosley wear as I’m making a small 1.5m direct drill for vineyards. Guess you replace the leg as it doesn’t seem like the point is changeable.

Yes that’s right. In various places on here it seems quite a few people favour the Metcalfe leg over the sabre which might be an alternative for you

Agreed. I’ve got both on drills and if converting/making another I’d 100% go with metcalfe. More refined, tip changeable (and different tips available), seed tube narrower and the leg rubbers maintain the leg in the optimum position better.

Very similar money.£160 and £180.
If you saw them in the flesh it really would be a no brainer. There’s absolutely no benefit of the weaving if they’re that close in price.
Edit. Unless you’re drilling beans 6” deep; the tip holder of the metcalfe would be very underground (and would wear) whereas weaving you wouldn’t have that issue.

Use the longer points from Metcalfe for beans.

Yeah I agree but some people like to put winter beans in very deep (6” plus) and I think even the longest points you’d have the bit where the roll pin goes underground. I have the shortest points with intermediates behind the tractor wheels. Thinking of changing to majority intermediate and the longest behind the wheels; to reduce disturbance further

At J.J.Metcalfe we have a complete units for self build direct drills, very low soil movement and fantastic penetration. With or without disc option.
