Seem to remember 20 or so years ago there was a waste company had a few older style Mogs with fifth wheel couplings and semi trailers I think possibly Hull trailers. Think they were HGV licensed. Ours mog is Ag specInteresting.. We are thinking the same thing. A ball dropped as far as possible into the chassis. The mog is crying out for a full range of semitrailers to get the weigh on the driving axles and improve road handling. South cave are looking at the 5 wheel concept and an Austrian firm Gogl have a 5th wheel setup for the big mogs. If enough people in the uk show interest in a 350 hp high speed off road haulage machine maybe this useless slow country will type approve this setup for hgv use. Where has that ball been sourced from? Take it this Is intended for agriculture haulage as a tractor?
He did have, not any moreI think @Cab-over Pete had a big ball type coupler kicking around from his glorious xerion days. Might be a start.
I'd love to have a go in a unimog, be interesting to see how smooth a ride it is in the field.
If it’s anything like my Zetros then fuel use is virtually irrelevant to costings. It seems to run on fresh air.
There has never been anything to beat the BigA but the Zetros does I reckon.
The fuel savings are not in the engine. mercedes will as good as anyone else but not significantly better. The fuel is saved by an old school gearbox that has no multiplate clutches whirling round all the time and no hydro pump and motor (vario) sucking up the horsepower and therefore fuel. We have a demo 435 (350 hp) mog out just now and fully loaded it actually pulls double the speed up hills compared to the 4220 with a good bit less fuel. I think most people have forgotton what true hp getting to the wheels feels like. Vario is great in the field but completely inefficent on the road. This new mog is so impressive, It just keeps pulling and pulling and the automated gearshifting is almost perfect. The only thing that's a bit odd is no clutch pedal so inching up to implements is a bit tricky.Pete, how is the Zetros so fuel efficient compared to a conventional ag machine? I presume the engine and gearbox are designed more around efficient travel speeds rather than outright grunt?

Yes. 16 speed synchro box. automated gearshift, clutch and throttle control to help provide a smooth shift. Automatic shifting or manual from a paddle shifter. Effortless in use. If you need to have vario style infinite control over speed and direction then a hydro box can be specced as well which can be selected and deselected on the move up to 50k I think. A fastrac/fendt is nearly all hydrostatic at the very low speeds anyway. This is the mog setup, Zetros will be similar but not sure about the hydro bit.I see, so it has a truck gearbox which I understand are normally based on a conventional box with a robotic clutch?
Interesting.. and still good on fuel! Does that box run through a torque converter or not?Nope. I understand exactly what you’re saying, but the Zoot has an Allison 6 speed auto. That’s the only reason it’s here.
When I got Mitchell Power Systems to come and service the box the chap was surprised it was fitted in such a machine. He said the Allison 3500 series is amongst the best gearboxes ever produced in the world, which was reassuring. He also said the only gearbox to touch it was the old Allison MT643, at which point I turned and pointed to the Big A and told him that was fitted with one.
The Zoot has a two speed transfer case and it’s perfectly suited to the Allison. It’s absolutely effortless and very efficient. I don’t need to blip the throttle or anything, it just does what I want when I want it to. The 320hp engine is well on top of the job fully loaded, with bags of torque. Having uprated the rear springs and now fitted the dual ag tread tyres it’s the machine it always wanted to be.
