Having watched this programne and the 70% markup the investors want, how would you pitch for funding for a farm business.I can hear them laughing now. What a sad world when food is such an important commodity. So come on let’s hear your pitch.
Hey Pete, can I have 100k to buy a drill 150k to buy a tractor and 350k for a combine and I'll get us half a mill back.
For this you can have 5% of my business.
Do you want to talk to the wall?

first of all, you have to get permission to leave your asylum, and agree to be accompanied by an attendant in a white coat.

that's probably the easiest part.

then the figures, you want the dragons to invest £200,000, for a dairy herd, then another £150,000 for tractor and kit, for a return that is extremely variable, usually about breakeven, sometimes below.

by now, the dragons are rolling about laughing, and your nurse rams a needle and syringe full of sedative, into your ass.

but the dragons give you 10 out of 10, for your entertainment value.

but, if you talk about sheep, and if lambs stay up at about £150+, you could probably make a bit of a case for investment, big if though.

but for an industry, that everybody has to rely on, to stay alive, the returns are not reflecting the importance of our industry.

they would miss us, if we were not there, but not for long .............!!!

Hi Dragons, my business is I produce food ,manage to buy all my input costs at retail but manage without any effort to sell everything at wholesale prices. Its a great investment and you will feel good feeding the public at your expense.I am looking for you to give me 12% of your business to support this good deed.

A friend who does feasibility studies for the automotive industry helped me to do a grant application for Rural Enterprise 20 years ago. He couldn’t believe the margins in ag then. Kept thinking we must have done the figures for cropping wrong as no one would work on such returns compared to capital invested. Couldn’t understand why we didn’t sell up, invest the money and go on holiday. But then he wasn’t a farmer, had more sense i guess

I haven't watched Dragon's Den for years, but one I saw that was a land based business venture, the Dragons would only invest if the land was included. Iirc the land was held separately by the individuals and so it was a no go.

Good evening Dragons, I’m looking for £15mn to invest in a farm. We’ll be putting a lot of the land into govt schemes for the environment, planting trees on the remaining productive arable land and inviting all and sundry to come and empty their dogs across the whole property. The dividend to you is the offset of the emissions from your other business interests against the sequestration generated on the land and allow you to put your money where your mouth is regarding carbon emissions. Oh and this management plan will massively devalue your investment.

……….

Ok.

Ok.

Ok.

Ok.

Thank you for the opportunity.

good job most of us are to damned stubborn, so we don't realise we are beating our heads against a brick wall.

the return on the huge sum, most of us have invested in our business, is pretty pathetic.
While the return on the investment is very poor the capital gain for owner occupiers has been decent, mainly due to the UK tax regime, of course that isn't much good for tenants that don't own their land, why they do it is a mystery. We mustn't forget that no one is forced to farm and life should be about other things than money.

If you got no money then "other things" become sadly irrelevant anyhow.

You would go in the Den and ask for 100k tell them you have assets of 2 million but the return only pays the water and Electricity bill you work 60 hours a week for free and you haven’t got no money only a over Draft I think they would laugh you out of the door and ask are you mad wanting to farm
