Possibly have chance of putting some digestate on some much poorer land we have. Heard from lots of people that's it's rocket fuel and then some horror stories. My main question is what will/might it do to poorer land?
The land is mostly permanent pastures with 20ac of meadows that have been...
Hi - looking at options for wintering sheep next year...managed all grass wintering this year....which was great! However....like all, i'm cursed to want more sheep 😅 and we really couldn't have run many more that we did this winter on grass alone imo.
Keen to grow some turnips for the last...
I'm talking about the time from tupping to lambing. Upland mostly PP no arable. The system is start lambing 1st April and house most of them from 1st Feb when they are scanned. Beltexes lambed inside, the rest turned out just before they're due to start. Feed is haylage, cake and blocks. I...
Hello,
We need your help!
Yesterday I got a call from our dairy cooperative. Antibiotic residues had been found in the tank. I couldn't believe I had made a mistake. But tested the suspected cow and the rest of the milk again in the evening. Both turned out positive. That meant there were more...
Thinking of sowing a brassica crop for our r1’s to start on prior to hopefully grazing fodder beet this autumn. Question is what brassica to go for? And then what do we do with the field once grazed? Intention would be to drill it with beet spring 24.
Keen for the brassica to plug our summer/...
Genuine questions from a naïve fruit farmer looking to be better informed!!
I not a big meat eater, but when i do eat beef would grass fed be a better choice. It seems quite expensive in comparison.

The barns and milking sheds of Takis Kazanas’s farm are dwarfed by the majestic mountains that overlook the Thessalian Plain. Cattle have been raised on this green expanse of land in northern Greece for millennia, but now regulators in Brussels are discussing rules that will lead to farms like...
Many of my holsteins are fussy grazers, don't hit good residuals.
So think I need to change the cow type, for a grazing system. Autumn block.
So do I start crossing my holsteins, or sell and buy? If I cross, what with?
TIA
I used to think Derrick used TFF for blatent advertising. But over the years I've become really interested in his business, such a range.
I do admit to been a minor competetor.
So far I've read about a wide range of fodder & bedding, fodder beet, grass & fodder seeds, salt for stock & road...
As above. Guy with fancy House that me and him have shared access, me to fields him to house. That's on title deeds so what is it worth ? I can get to fields another way. Doesn't want me using the road . Is it worth a grand ? Long road.
How are people getting on now we are paying for a dry Jan/Feb?
Spring barley drilled 2 weeks ago, not through yet. Drilled this first as on heavy ground which we managed to muck in Feb but no ploughing and it went in well.
Some spring beans drilled 10 days ago and had another go this afternoon...
What are your thoughts on implementing a more mixed farming approach? Would this create too many barriers to market? Other than the benefits to the soil and diversification, are there any direct benefits to the farmer? Anyone have any alternative ideas? All thoughts appreciated!
We have grown fodder beet for the first time here lifted and fed out on grass and stubbles. The ewes have done very well and was planning on putting quite a bit more in this time around.
however following the snow and rain we have had in the last week the areas I have put it out on Recently...
Yield and consistency are still key but consider your farm system requirements first says Adam Simper of Agrii
If grown correctly, with the right establishment and input strategy, fodder beet will outyield many other forage crops and provide a consistent and reliable high-energy feed source...
