Why is this never discussed? Why is it always farming land that has to be re-wilded?
Is it because a lot of the people who support re-wilding also like horse riding. Surely a hobby shouldn't carry more weight than feeding a nation?
Started spring barley yesterday, Laureate. Yielding pretty well and nice looking sample, but the straw is a dusty pink - is this drought stress or a varietal characteristic?
Just pondering upon what foods we are self sufficient in.
I know the figure on the whole is about 60%. But surely that includes all the stuff we eat that cannot be grown here ie bananas, etc
If we had to become 100% self sufficient in food what would our diet look like ?

Horrible thread title to start, ridiculous really, totally unnecessary; but Putin has done it... it seems crazy. :(
I think we - Nato / the West / Democracies - should arm and finance Ukraine. I think we should have a zero tolerance of infringement of NATO airspace and territory.
And I think...
I am at the end of my 3 year cycle for Nroso. What with one thing and another I have not managed to do as many training events as usual and ended up with 29 points. Saw this on my statement and coincidentally my local NIAB conference was last week so I popped along and signed the BASIS and Nroso...

Does anyone use the snow foam style cleaning products for machinery? i see the Larson farms guys using it all the time and wondered if anyone had any recommendations for gun and products
I,ve heard down the grapevine that the EA are banning autumn slurry and solid muck applications as AHDB have told them there is no crop justification for applications of N or manur containing N apart from on osr
This effectively means all and any livestock manures or digestate cannot be...

Hello,
I have just listened to a podcast featuring a regenerative livestock farming couple, and they were discussing the changes from BPS to the ELM scheme. What are everyone's thoughts on the ELM scheme? Will it make farming fairer? Will it change things for new entrants? Does anyone have any...
I don't know much about horticulture, but I guess it started there. Fruit and vegetable contracts being offered which led to a consolidation of producers and limited marketing opportunities.
Enticing contracts which offered some safety from the ever volatile pork prices means there is virtually...
Next year I have said that we will grow a patch of Sunflowers as a fund raiser for the local school. People can come and pick a bunch for a fiver or something like that. Need to work on the details. What variety would be a good bet? Not too tall, and not a massive head either. We had some last...
