Just replaced two teats on my milk bar and noticed two calves getting agitated. Kept squeazing the teats but neither of them works, absolutely nothing comes out (only bought them yesterday). Will always check them before filling with milk in the future! Is it too much to ask that these things...
Hello
Posting here to see if anyone else has had a similar experience. Had quite a few ewes down/die with listeria from silage baled in the wet last summer. However the listeria manifested in a really odd way - it didn't seem to cause neurological symptoms. The ewes would go really thin, go...
Had a ewe lamb triplets and mastitis on both sides. Had a big bag but felt soft and normal. Went to check milk and now hard and cold. She’s had a jab of Trymox and metacam and used uddermint. Since then one side has gone down. The other side is very large and firm. The coldness comes and goes...
Odd 1, last 3 days ewes been a nightmare for not wanting lambs. Be that inside or outside. Singles, twins, different breeds etc.
Could it be the weather or something?
This year unlike previous years has been different in that iv kept easycares and lambed them outdoors. Having previously kept commercial types and lambed indoors which has been time and labour intensive. The easycares iv not had to intervene once just observe from a distance. Each to there own...
Lost the first calf here the other day, was quite sure he’d had a belly full the day he was born, cows teats were clean looking, but she has a big udder so hard to tell if it had gone down much. Calf took some gut infection, swole up and died on the 3rd day.
Took her in (they’re on the hill)...
I,m looking to improve the lights in the milking parlour, because its a bit dark at udder level. What are your thoughts on placing 12v rope lights below the rump rail?
What liners/ cups are people using? Wanting to update my parlour, currently running the old stainless westfalia units quite weighty, keep Hearing good things about these square/triangle liners? We do suffer with slippage and they don’t like short teats which the modern dairy cow usually has.
Hi All,
I am picking up some shearing jobs of my own this year.
So far only been small pet flocks but getting a fair few. Just wondering who everyone uses for insurance when shearing.
So as we are all aware the weather patterns we are seeing are becoming a little more extreme
We are all losing days/weeks due to bad weather.
For me I seem to lose more and more working days each year for the last few years due to bad weather, this is obviously having a knock on effect in...
Apart from not grazing calving has gone well.
very little mastitis none at all in the heifers. However we have around 8% with a blind quarters. I was unable to test seal the quarters in question before Christmas. Suggesting the problem had occurred earlier In their lives.
thoughts on what...
Even after 7 or 8yrs, I still consider myself as a newcomer to sheep rearing.
As my own lambing comes near an end and my mind starts to function somewhat nearer to usual, I'm wondering what others consider an acceptable or even inevitable level of lamb mortality at time of lambing itself and...
Got a pen with some triplets in , ewes are pretty milky so are feeding lambs fairly well (good mothers unusual for charollais) , just a few need a top up before they get onto creep if others have got to ewe first , I usually put cades on a ewe 2 or similar , but want to avoid that if poss as i...
Anyone seeing more joint ill than normal? I always get a hand full but treating about a dozen at the moment.
Lamb outside and these are approx 10 to 15 days old.
Weather been crap like everywhere so prob the cause.
Treating with a big hit of Trimox LA and metacam.
Recently bought some tenanted land. On visiting it today, I found this ewe clamped over a lamb. She had no water. There was no-one on site.
This looks completely unacceptable. Who better to ask than TFF.
We had a calf born last Saturday with a very long tongue. It was out about 10 inches or so. We gave him anti inflammatory three days the vet looked at him a couple of times he’s had the usual protocol steroid injection Selinium and vitamin e. The tongue has gone down a fair bit still looks too...

Occasionally, abomasal bloat will be an issue on farms – with clostridium bacteria or lactic acid usually to blame for producing the gas.
The issue is generally caused by poor hygiene, dirty bedding and inaccurate feeding.
With the calving season now...
