1976 John Deere 3130

I was wondering if anyone knew some history on our 1976 John Deere 3130 registration LBB 187P. My family originally bought it from Mike Richmond's in Malpas 1992/1993. It had come to them from Corbett's also based in Malpas, prior to that it had come from a Heavy Clay Farm or a Heavy Clay Hill Farm. Not sure whereabouts. I've heard between 10 and 20 had been built in this configuration with the duncan cab. I'd never seen one like it until a few years back I dug around online and ended up finding two still kicking about. We still have the tractor, I'm currently part way through restoring it.

Now Then..
When I was a lad, in 1978, we used to get new 4 cylinder John Deere tractors with no cabs. We had a row of Duncan 'Supercabs' in stock to fit, as and when new tractors arrived. The new 3 & 6 cylinder tractors sold with 'S' & 'T' registrations all had the factory fitted OPU cab.
I guess buying the tractor without a cab an the dealer fitting a Duncan cab was a cheaper option. We had at least 2 local 3130 tractors with the Duncan cab, the rest were OPU cabs...
Back in those days, 96 horsepower was considered a big tractor!!

I think around 1977 was the change over period for some cab supplies
We bought a brand new August 1977 R reg 2030 with the pictured style of white roof Duncan Cab, next door neighbour bought a February 1978 R reg 1630 but it had a newer style green roofed black framed Duncan Supercab & another local farm bought a 1978 S reg 3130 with a sekura OPU cab - remember thinking the 3130 was a modern state of the art monster & made our 2030 look ancient................until 1982 when we bought a fwd 2140 OPU , neighbour got a 2wd 1640 OPU the 3130 was traded for a fwd 4440 with SG-2 cab.........that was proper farming.

We had one, many hours spent with a JD3760 drag chopper with manual spout control…. Side loading …. We were really kicking on ! ….
Hot hard noisy job but seemed fun at the time.
Like so many old machines….. wish I still had it . Bought second hand from Alexander and Duncan Leominster.
I can hear it now roaring up the field. We did alot of contract mowing with ours on a Kidd Clipper 240. That would make it growl in some good crop !

I'll find some. Cab is currently off at the minute mind as it has been an ongoing restoration project. And someone in the past has painted the tractor the wrong shade of green. 🤦
I wouldn't worry ours was in a similar state 🤣 Someone had painted the front in like a Fraser green. Masked the badge off with electrical tape! Funny because its been with us for 30+ years and must of happened in the last 10 years when it was sat! I am currently in the process of patching the mudguards, they have gone rotten directly above the brackets. Apart from that aren't bad so well worth saving. While I'm at that I am also making some new pieces of tin sheeting that go behind the back wheels and bolt into the cab frame. They had rotted away mainly wasn't worth saving. So decided to make some new out of some sheet metal.

The 3130 was a revelation to us, that six cylinder was soooo smooth after 2130 and zetor 8045 ( wouldn’t mind one of those either, was a heck of a tractor inthe day)
Hard to believe how things have changed in a generation….

This is my one, bought on York sale in 2003 for £2200. I do have the correct 18 inch front wheels for it. WPW 816S
Ours is on same front as yours. They had just put them on before we bought it.
