Drilling into green cover this pm. I haven't had the growth that some of the others here have which is a bit disappointing but expect it will be good enough!
What's the soil like underneath? We've been drilling (W Barley) into similar looking green cover, chopped spring barley straw with a dash of Pedders No.1, and the seedbed is like a Mary Berry cakemix, absolutely lovely

Black oats (not a cheap experiment) and peas (fss) drilled 8th Aug, plus a lot of volunteer Wlin, some black grass and a less than subtle show of charlock. Father and agronomist are bullish that it won't set viable seed flowering now. Due to go into SW.

I'm not sure why the file uploader rotated pic. Its the steepest hill on the farm, but its not that steep.

Soil condition was pretty good. It is a poor field so I am hoping that the green manure of the CC will give the field a boost.

What rate of black oats have people drill?

In the feild I previously posted, it was a fairly lean rate, about 20 kg/ha in the mix I recall. Its looking even yellower now and even without the charlock it would be a case of spotting the oats in amoungst the linseed volenteers. Nothing like theabove pictures.

Oat and vetch mix at 40kgs/Ha drilled about 20th Aug. 40% Vetch at 60g TGW 60% Spring Oat at 32g TGW.
Interestingly some Panache Black Oats I bought to put in in the spring have a TGW of only 18g.
It was drilled using a Rapid with front discs in about an inch to encourage weed and volunteer germination.

I was wondering about its nitrogen cycle here. It's been a benign autumn here and they haven't stopped growing yet, but have they cleaned up excess N that would have gone down the drains - if we had any! or did I mineralise enough with the drill to get them this lush? I will spray them off 3 weeks before drilling so will there be any noticeable nutritional benefit over the course of the following crop?

The difference in an early September drilled crop.

And now crown rust: "The disease is favoured by high temperatures (20-25oC) so epidemics usually occur in June-July."

Sure as heck wasn't 25 centigrade when I took that.
