AD maize rents

Is undersown maize with Sfi winter bird cover the new fashionable crop? 🤷‍♂️ It’s been mentioned a few times this last week. It certainly looks good financially.

Think the budget will be blown in to outer space if that happend on every fbt and cfa in the uk. But the point is correct sfi will mean that rents will not fall like many predicted.

Think some people are going to be in a mess. An agent friend has successfully got an offer for 2000ac of AHL2 as well as many miles of hedgerows. Not that they know it yet but existing staff will be going after harvest 24 and there’s a machinery sale on the cards for the autumn.
When the ELMS budget is fully used and they turn round and say it’s only 10% of an sbi allowed then that farm is knackered because buying all new equipment again and restaffing won’t be any option with wheat at £150/t.

Yes going balls deep is a bad idea but I am biased

I have heard that many, many very big farm's are considering doing similar.

don't forget no pesticide and dd takes it to nearly 400/a ;)

That’s what I’m going to do on 500ac. I’ve got no choice to be brutally honest. If I don’t sign up we’ll be in a mess. Sadly it means a summer job will go along with a couple of tractor hires. A much reduced fertiliser and chemical order on top of that. Next year if things look better I can halve that 500ac to 250ac in the scheme but I suspect a year of doing much less might just push me further into it and put the lot in.

I think we might have to get used to it with prices and cost of production where they are; not to mention all the right weather but at the wrong time.

It's not as if the golden goose is laying particularly well at the moment.

Reading through all these threads, has British/English government not put a cap on the SFI budget?
Ireland got into a mess with a nitrates grant scheme in 2006 which cost the government billions as they had underestimated the amount of applications. Now every scheme in Ireland has allocated budget.
By the looks of it your government could fall into the same trap and no produce.
