Advantage feeders

What does everyone feed through the 3 in 1 as a source of protein. Currently mixing a protein pellet with barley and oats but they tend to block if shut down any less than a kilo a peice due to the pellets getting damp from the ewes saliva
I would suggest trying peas in the mix ...but I havnt had the chance to try them yet .

Did think about using soya but I think the saliva and damp atmosphere would cause this to stick and block up like the dust from the protein pellet

Was going to try peas but a few people have said that they don't run well due to the big size difference to the corn. The protein pellets also have minerals in them.
Fair point.
Curently We ve got a mix of oats and 33% blend pellets atm mostly feeding down in troughs ..but .going to fill the feeder for some ewes tomorrow. When we used the same mix last year it went ok with only the 'usual' sort of clean out of the groove. But the pellets we use are about 3mm dia. And no more than 3/4 inch long which shortens a bit in the mixer anyway they compliment the oats size nicely and flick out about the same.

Biggest thing I dont like about the system is that the ewes vary a fair bit in how they take to/use the feeder .

And of course with lambing ewes you really want to know that they are getting the right amount per day...

We're do u get your protein pellets from as I've heard of getting the mill to put more fat into the mix to stop them disintegrating and blocking.

Ours are running better now just u need to clean them out twice a day which Is still easier than fighting them at troughs.

NwF. They are small size and good mixers and they are pretty much same size/shape as whole grain size, but yes an amount of moisture on them will reduce them to mush so yes extra fat will help a bit resist that I should think ,
Also I should add , those particular ones are for females only as there is higher Mg etc ie ingredients in them for in lamb ewes not for males .

famous last words , smaller ewes will get through ring feeders way too easy an answer...:cautious:

ordinary field gates turned upside down (of certain top bar spacing ) or cattle gates of certain bar spacing think height as well as width for creeping. 😊

I did my dissertation on it :sneaky:" the in's and out's of lamb creeps " 😂

They don't have the fold down creep panel that the full sized feeders have.
You'd need to put a creep gate (I'd use a upside down half of a ring feeder) around the 150 feeder.

That should work fine.
Cheers Dave 👍🏻 Really appreciate that.

Never used or seen an advantage feeder before, so your reply is very useful, particularly about the lack of creep panel. A half ring upside down sounds a good way around it 👍🏻

I've been seriously looking at getting the 800HD but thought the 150 would be a good start, whilst I save up. The orange mineral feeder is also on the shopping list 🫣

To be honest the creep panel is good on the bigger feeders, but there comes a point that if a 35kg+ lamb can get its head in, so can a smaller ewe.
As you'll see that lambs actually have quite wide heads compared to the more maternal type ewe breeds.

Usually find thats a good time to be weaning

I'll try find a photo of what I do with the mineral feeders to make a mobile drag along mineral and water system

Those mineral feeders are brilliant, we're using alot of loose minerals now, surprising how much lambs take

What are these like for cattle. As an indoor/outdoor creep feeder at 1kg of ration or nut. Will they gum up if kept dry indoors during the winter feeding ration at higher rates
