No problems with blocking with the 5mm pellets @rancher what was low st rate you could set it at with them ?

@exmoor dave do/did you put pellets through yours also , what size ?

Dave do you use yours for your early batch what mix through it ?

Have one with the ewe lambs on a sniff of barley, but want to use it lambs next year so looking at options

For early lambs I use the feeders as ad lib creep feeders, oats & creep pellets at 50/50.
Pellets are mvf multi lamb pellets, a very high quality 18% feed, little 3mm pellets.

Have used oats & protein pellets for ewes.

Have also mixed oats and ewe nuts for post lambing feeding ewes in Feb instead of blocks&buckets on about 350g/day setting- I really was very pleased with this!

Were you able to restrict the feed down to the lower levels like 200-300g/day?

I'm really tempted to try soya with oats
Good question we went ad lib when we started with shreds as they had put on some frame on hay and oat/hi pro soya, notice you have to clean slots more when feeding shreds as some bridging when not fully open, me thinks it is saliva swelling shreds.

Anyone using one for housed sheep? Salesman told me it would work great I'd just need to turn it down more however I'm trying to restrict the last 20 lambs to 1kg a day of oats as a trial and having no luck. Moving the slides one setting alters between them eating nothing to eating the lot (only been putting enough in for a day luckily). I've moved the water to the other end of the shed so they have to walk past the hay rack hoping they'll go to that instead of the feeder

Yea it's hard to move if you don't have a tractor, we have a chain on it that we tow with the quad, we move it to a fresh area every time we fill it, ground recovers quicker if it's not mucked up........we have a tractor loader as well, I keep it off the land in bad weather.
The ration needs to be grain or pellets, our pellets are about 5mm and work fine.
Ours is the 500, it is easier filled and has more trough space than the 800, I think it was cheaper at the time too,
It doesn't hold as much pellets as you'd imagine though , it only holds about 350kgs so don't be misled by the model nos.
I've a suspicion that the 500 isn't available now, can't seem to get much information on it now

All Feeders are designed to be towed on their skids 500 feeders can be fitted with wheel kits (optinal extra)
The Model numbers relate to Volume in Litres not KG so depending on specific weight of feed 500 feeder would be circa 350-400 KG of feed

Yes 500 models are still available in UK & Ireland

Minimum Gap a sheep need to lick from is 8mm

Set top adjuster to circa number 2 (enough to let grains flo) set bottom adjuster 10 mm circa 2.5 on scale this will feed 200- 300 grams ish

with grain use white adjuster guard (ladder)

small adjustments make a big difference

Don't let the feeder go empty as this encourages frenzied feeding as they think they need to go more often before it runs out.

weigh a litre of feed to work out feed density then calculate daily consumption off the chart inside the hopper.

Blocking with the pellets isn't a problem but if the meal is dusty the mixture of saliva and dust creates a dough that slows up the pellets so the little troughs have to be scraped to keep them free.
There's a tool supplied with the feeder to use, only takes a sec every second or third day.
Lambs are eating 0.4kg/day at the moment without any problem, resetting the lower adjuster will restrict intake without effecting the flow of the pellets

If it's not too full I push our 500 feeder with the quad, just have to be careful if little lambs about not to push it over them, drive around it first to check nothing sleeping behind it.

Asap please ....:D

what size are the nuts....?

20180123_214838.jpg

Nuts on the right are standard size (in this case cattle nuts)

Nuts on the left are what I'm using, mvf prestige 20%,
The diameter is slightly smaller and more importantly the nut length is shorter.

So 50/50 oats/ewe nuts

75 ewes on 1x 800 model feeder (so abit over stocked), aiming for 1kg/ head/ day.

Started ewes on just oats @ 200g/day setting.
Cake fed separately on floor.

Then put mix in feeder, on top setting of 4
Bottom setting of 3.
Using ladder guards
650/g day eaten, but I suspect not everything was eating it.

Changed setting to 5 top, 3 bottom, 85kg feed put in.....gone in 20 hrs = 1.36kg/ head (adjusted for 24hrs)

Changed settings back to 4 top 3 bottom.
75kg, 24hrs to clear = 1kg/head

I think the bulk of the ewe's are now eating from the feeder, so even if all aren't then it's not going to be much above 1kg/day each

Might need to adjust settings down abit more.
But I did try top at 3 and bottom at 3 and there was flow problems

How do you mix the oats and pellets?

I've got a 900 lt plastic pallet box that i've put a Shute on the bottom to empty it.

I just layer each measure of the ingredients, then when I empty it in to a feeder the different bits seem to mix by themselves.

Could use shovel to mix in the box as we every few layers are added.
