My wife and i were at a friend's house this afternoon, she told us she had just finished with her partner. He was an alcoholic but had been sober for a long time, turns out he wasn't and she was devastated because she had no idea. Drinking before and after work, doing sneaky things like hiding his drink in his sports bottle. They didnt live together so it was perhaps easier to conceal. We were a bit blind sided we've been out with them as couples a fair bit he would always have a soft drink or a zero beer and taxi us. He runs a couple marathons a year, plays football a few times week always very health conscious from my perspective. His bother is dying in hospital a guy in his early 40s his liver is failing and he isnt coping well, this is when it all spilled out that he's been drinking for a while lost his job because he was drinking.

A friend of mine reckons that when you're born, another date is set, that of expiry. Its unchangable, and you don't get to know when it is til it happens.

His rationale is that some people seemingly abuse their bodies with whatever substances exist and still live to a ripe old age, while some live in complete moderation yet fall off their perch at a young age.

His point being live for today, because you never know what tomorrow will bring,

What if you don't believe in use by dates?

I had a multiple heart by-pass January 2000 . Just before I left MRI the surgeon who did the op called me into his office . "a word before you go -- I've given you 15 years of quality life again now , and I'm now going to give you a bit of advice . I'm not worried about red meat , dairy , sugar, and suchlike things except to say moderation in all things , but what I am going to say , if you smoke -- STOP -- if you don't it'll kill you . I'd smoked from being in the army - woodbines , and "graduated " on to 20 packs of Players . doing about 50 or 60 a day . "Do you smoke ?" "I don't now!" I gave it up there and then . OH , mother , father , and uncle too . None of us ever smoked again . What I'm really saying is that you need to have a good reason to quit any addiction , and also , most importantly , you have to actually want to quit , as "livestock " above says !
When we produced our last child my daughter she was very poorly in hospital a few times almost died the last time with broncholitis.
When I reckoned up how old I would be when she is 21 I thought smoking was a luxury (if you can call it that) that I couldn’t afford and a selfish one at that. Looking at her was as good of an excuse to pack in as any

Some come up with that theory but I don’t believe a word of it.
Father made a good friend in hospital when he was basically on his way out. The fella was high up in the army had been on with depleted uranium missiles twice in Iraq and been in hospital previously for treatment but he was in for his last time and had been told so.
One night when I was in to visit they were both explaining what they had been in amongst in their careers and how it hadn’t effected their health. Father as a busy farmer had been in amongst most things which I don’t need to go into you all know. Some other folks in the room listened intently to this I burst out laughing I said ‘yes I can see look at the state of you two a good example’
Sadly neither had any betterness for their ailments.
Father died at 63 his army mate was a fair bit younger in his fifties
Actually just sitting at my auntie and uncles house the mrs is attending to my auntie who is feeling poorly but can’t get out of bed without help. They are in their late 80’s and early 90’s respectively.
Had carers for 3/4 times a day for a good few years now. Had a much longer life 30 plus years the last 10/15 hasn’t been living though really

I drink lots and lots of water while working but if I drink a lot of tea a lunch time then you do need the toilet a lot as caffeine is a diuretic. Less caffeine helps and keeps you hydrated
I broke my leg a few months ago and had to heal up fast, sleep became the most important part to recover fast so I cut out caffeine for 6 weeks as caffeine stays in your system for up to 12 hours
The caffeine limits Mg being absorbed, and Mg is important to get water into cells for hydration.
Anyone who drinks water and just gets bloated or has to pi$$ all the time most likely has too much caffeine on board or is low in Mg, maybe both.

I have only experienced one person who was an alcoholic.

From what I have picked up it's a case of, once an addict always an addict, it's a genreal weakness of character.

Graham Coxon talks about alcoholism in his autobiography... He says you're ok till it takes you past the pickle point. Once your picked you lose the ability to ever drink moderately again, and it's permanent.

By pickled he explains that a gherkin is a gherkin for good, it cant ever be a cucumber.

I wonder if once you're body is pickled it reduces the risk of other things like cancer developing?

Know someone whose smoked all her life in her 80s she's yellow. But she's sharp as a tack and fit.

Anything that suppresses immunity increases the likelihood of cancer.
Our bodies are killing off cancer cells every minute of every day, if your immunity drops, so does the ability to fight it getting a grip.
Anything form long term lack of sleep to being an alcoholic will up those chances.
Hence why people say that stress can cause cancer.

Wife is reading a book (Gabor Maty or something she said) and there’s a correlation between those of us who repress emotion/anger/stress, those who vent it and which demographic is more likely to suffer cancer. She said that there was an observation made somewhere that more nice people got cancer than the dicks, to the point that the staff doing the tests were 75% accurate in predicting if someone was likely to have cancer based purely on their interpersonal interactions.

One of dad's old friends from school and later, had a rented dairy farm, himself and wife had a milk round each, but as a generation died the milk rounds kept getting smaller and smaller.

He then started sub-letting a lot of the land, took over both rounds himself, when he'd finished the round he'd call at the local for a 'couple' of bottles of Barley wine for his lunch, trot off and milk what cows he had left, then back to the pub for more of the same.

Eventually all the cows went and he just bought milk in for the round, how he never got caught drinking and driving is a mystery to all.

One day dad got a call from his missus 'George has gone missing', he was owing back rent for years on the council farm which was also where they lived, the other land belonged to a local mill and we'd taken it on just previous

It took a week before they found him, there was a disused well where they lived, the lid had rotted out some years ago, George had thrown himself down head first, seems it was the smell that made someone discover the body.

He was probably 14 stone in his prime, I'd bet he didn't weigh much above half that the last time I saw him alive.

Dad had tried to help him for a long time, we ended up shifting his muck piles because he no longer had a spreader, used our staff to help make his hay.

His wife was never so well off financially after his death, council threw her out of the house and put her in a nice little bungalow, doctor had diagnosed her with COPD or would probably be called farmers lung back then, all the benefits associated came her way.

Dad offered a van and a couple of us to shift her belongings, the house was a terrible state, roof was leaking windows rotting, damp everywhere, should have been the councils problem to sort out, but because they hadn't been paying the rent was scared they'd be thrown out so never tried to get it repaired.

I think everyone’s health is a lottery the only thing is what you do alters your odds either in your favour or against your favour

If you have diabetes, you need to be managing it 100% of the time, or it will get it's own back eventually. Some people who do this follow all the rules and have remarkably good health, it doesn't need to be a condition that has significant health impacts if you look after yourself. I've had people tell me that they we're ever really taking care of themselves but having the diagnosis of pre-diabetes or diabetes really turned their thinking on it's head and they get got their heads in the game. Done well, a proportion of them can basically reverse the condition and put it into remission.

I have met a number of former smokers who smoked heavily until something malign happened to them and which caused them to quit.

Know a chap just finished up work in his early sixties. Retired due to ill health.

Pretty obese, drink habit, diabetic, got away with it for years then these last 2-3years it all came home to roost. Covid didn’t help, had pneumonia for 3 weeks in 2020 before GP finally agreed to see him, then straight to casualty, wrecked his lungs. Ambulances at house couple times a month, became a liability, clumsy, lost confidence which led to more bumps and bad decisions.

Now sits home, most days on oxygen, barely able to walk further than the car. Very sad way to finish up.

Obesity and diabetes are often interlinked. Couple it with hypertension and it's call metabolic syndrome, a triangle that can be difficult to break out of or reverse.

As I keep writing on this forum- neither 60 or 70 is old and you can enjoy good health into and beyond these ages if they just take a little bit of care.

In the summer when under pressure go to work with 2 litres of fizzy drink and family packs of Haribo.🤦
This point has stuck in my mind since you made it and it made me concerned.
I'm no health guru, but a lot of professionals call Dementia type 3 diabetes, and stronger links are being made between sugar and cancers all the time.

A lot of the alarms raised about fats over recent decades has been pushed by sweet and chocolate manufacturers to distract from the health problems caused by sugar.
