Alleopathic effect on following spring barley crops after multi species cover crops containing oats ?

Am aware of alleopathic effects of oats but hoped that using spring oats in our multi species cover crops would not cause too many issues with emergence of following spring barley crops ( compared with using 100 % oat cover crops for example ) Had only approx. 50% emergence with spring barley this year ( planted 400 seeds and ended up with 200-250 plants ) Not sure it was all caused by sheep poaching when grazing cover crops in the wet , suspect an element of alleopathy???? Spring beans all established fantastically direct drilled at same time after same cover crops.

That’s not ideal. Direct drilled? You might get better answers in that section.

Ive been growing 90% Oat 10% Phacelia covers before SB for 4 years, they've been grazed by sheep also, but last year in particular the poaching was terrible as the sheep were grazing over that horrible period in Feb with the big storms, that's why I always cultivate them shallow with the all-rounder before drilling and have had no issues with emergence compared to the non cover cropped areas

Spring white straw crops are the worst/most difficult to follow IMO......I.e. Spring Oats and Spring Barley are hateful. However, i doubt the percentage of Spring oats in a cover will have posed such a serious effect.......Or did you go to town with Oat the seedrate? Suspect T Hectares & ajd132 lines of thought are more pertinent.

Maybe it was the poaching damage, would explain why beans were better as deeper drilling with the dale would have hooked out the footprints better than when drilling the barley ??

I had quite a few spring cereals after spring barley this year. On the odd bit that the barley volunteers didn’t get sprayed out and was drilled green there was 20% of the crop there.
Some spring barley near me showed up combine trails where winter barley overwintered, it was dead and yellow when direct drilled though.

i used to be very anti oats in covers but have found as long as % is kept low they are not a problem for following crops

not sure I would include them ahead of spring barley if i grew if however

bigger seeds seem to suffer less - peas or beans after grass always better than a cereal
