Sorry for not giving an answer to the OP (but it is related to the subject), I have often wondered how were anvils made in the 18th century and beyond, ( different carbon steels in different areas of the anvils, and these were what the industrial revolution was built on, how were they cheap enough for very village blacksmith to own. Anvils were the Hi tech wonder
of that age.

Paid £350 for mine but comes with cast stand too.
It came out of the village smithy about 40 years ago and I finally got my hands on it a year or so back.
What surprised me was it is 2cwt but I picked it up, carried it 10 yards and put it in my van. I would have said it wasn’t possible.

Sold a large one on ebay about 18 months ago £700 .. a bloke from the US bought it and paid to ship it.
Bit of a trend over there for forging your own swords ect.. Discovery channel forged in fire is the cause.

I've got 2 old ones, one proper blacksmiths type with the nose, and one just a big rectangular block of metal, the latter came from my great grandfathers steam sawmill/cartwrights shop. I rescued it when the site was sold for development in the 80s.
