They can feel it in their feet after a flush of good grazing, but there's heat in the foot, and they generally pitch to walk - unlike the store lamb in this case.

yes they can.
but will more usually present as in acidosis ie blow up be off food etc
clover around on the farm means they will be acclimatized to it in that respect but it can happen easily when corn /concentrates are introduced /being fed
Yes had a few of those over the years.
Thus one just went down hill too fast though I think.

'Fraid I'm stumped enough to suggest your lamb died of a complex of afflictions of some sort, sorry. Unless he'd had a deficiency caused by the grazing before the clover that caught up with him.
