Farm IT by Border for Sheep mainly. One off payment for the program appeals.

After , does it definitely require an annual 'support payment' ?

I don't think you need to have the annual support, but the software won't get updated as regs change, or to cope with any problems thrown up when your pc does a windows update, etc.

Shearwell is the same, you don't have to have the support.

but at least the core program with all the info on it is yours ,not leased .

Backing up regularly ,(which is a good habit anyway) would help keep it safe surely ? and at least is free.

Border works with an Agrident Reader. which we have and like. I don't want too much out in the field with me, I don't rely on a phone much in that respect.

What model agrident are you using?

It doesn't require the annual support payment , it'll still work just won't be updated with any new features or solutions to any glitches. I think annual support Is only £60 for the basic update so not much to worry about.

I'm looking at the 300, which is the stick version.

I assume you rate it. Any downsides?
Its not a stickreader so less reach obviously . but same capability otherwise as that one (awr 300) and cheaper. awr 300 does need a bit of something added to work with a ble bluetooth weigh scale though )
apr 600 will work with ble bluetooth type weigh scales like the Wo gallagher and trutest S3 ones.
its suits me. grabbing reads in weigh crate or race or small pen .close to.
easier to hold than a phone , screen wont break if you drop it and good buttons to press not screen for when its wet /dirty .
fits in your (decent sized) pocket . Easy to stow away /put down on a shelf or what ever .which of course a stick reader isnt so easy to do.
better than a stickreader to hold in one hand and use as well.

Coupled with the right software capability loaded inside ( most comprehensive one ime comes with the ones tGW sell. )

Awr300 read range is a couple of inches more than the Apr600. On the other hand Apr600 has a numeric keyboard and awr300 doesn't. There's a clip on extension available for the Apr600. So it can be a one handed stick when you want it to be and when stick unclipped it's a pocket reader.

yes lets be clear, the range of an apr 600 is such that it has to be almost touching the ear tag to read , not a problem in close quarters in a pen etc i have found as it helps in not reading the wrong ear thats very close by.
.......but what ever , it works for me i genuinely like and use it effectively , and we have a shearwell stick reader that has a slightly longer range of read plus the stick itself for reach , but its not the one that is picked up to use .

The difficulty with all this expensive tech is actually finding what suits you in your real situation , not some one else's with all the different factors in volved

Personal experience is all using different types to learn which suits you is the best but how do you do that without actually buying one and using it in your system for awhile?
and that will be relatively expensive.

There's not that much difference between APR600 and AWR300. APR600 with typical sheep tag maximum range is 8 inches. AWR300 with the same tag is 10 inches so there's a 2 inch read range difference. in worst orientation APR600 is 5 inches and AWR300 is about the same
