App update needed for iOS

Do you have a different car for journeys to each customer and another for shopping trips? Using an app (and especally a third party one like tapatalk) to access a web based forum seems such a pointless waste of time.
I use apps for everything online , so your post is a waste of time [emoji1787] but thanks for your input,

Wow - a different tool for each operation. That sounds like a lot more work than using one browser and a range of bookmarks. You really should find a young person to help streamline your system.
I think we're wasting time trying [to help him]. He's been having mobile phone/tech use issues since almost time immemorial and won't listen even when told. Its always the device's or the software's fault.

Come on Derrick, at least try to show willing!

Many old apps will throw up this warning and will stop working this year. This is because the developers have not updated the app to suit, if at all recently. I have two or three on my phone that have not been updated for at least a couple of years, probably because there was no need but most likely because the developers have lost interest and gone on to do other things.
Its all part of a game to force buying new phones... some of the newer apps dont work on my iphone because they require newer iOS firmware that my phone can install

The multitude of phones make it so difficult for us as well. The software is expected to work uniformly on over 100 different devices running a 1000 different phone/operating systems which then run a number of different browsers. literally 1000s of combinations and you juts can't test them all. We run all our tests on 10 different combination and even that takes a massive amount of time.

An APP is actually helpful in this problem. We are over a month into the latest upgrade testing and we have just binned everything to date and started again :(

I would have thought that the phone's browser would automatically arrange the mobile site to suit its screen dimensions. It is silly if the site has to be configured for each phone type or size individually. Surely all that should be required is for it to work on Edge, Chrome and Safari and Firefox? Or more precisely that those browsers should all work with whatever language is universally used to program the site. Or am I being naive in thinking this?

If only that was the case. They all process code differently. As each one thinks they are better than the other and has their own unique processes.

Maybe but they all use either Android or iOS and I would have thought that the main issue was ensuring that any app, not the web site itself so not really relevant to the browser, remained working with the various versions of the operating systems. All very peculiar. Browsers are usually pretty bomb proof when it comes to rendering web sites whether desktop or mobile aren't they?

I just type 'the farming forum' in to Firefox on Android, finds it straight away, log in and no problems, or Chrome either, just works.
Yes, it usually just works. As simple as that. Indeed as soon as I tap 't' in the box, the address self fills. Better than that, its saved once into favourites and stored as a tab under the address bar on my Chrome, so I just tap on that. Using Safari, a tap on the address box brings up my favourite web site icons and I just tap on the TFF one.

In Derrick's case it looks like he has once chosen, perhaps inadvertently, the desktop site. I've explained in simple terms how to get it to choose the mobile site once and for all. I believe he has a Samsung. My daughter has one of those and has no problem whatsoever with any web site. I wonder whether anyone else with his phone has any issues viewing this site in its mobile form? Samsung is probably the best selling phone brand out there and has many models working on current and older Android iterations, so if there is an issue then surely someone apart from Derrick would have mentioned it before now. :scratchhead:

But which version. There have been 40 versions of IOS in the last 5 years. We have users logging in with ALL of them. All the browsers are also on different versions. Most render in a similar way, so if you leave mice margins, it all works. But not all spacing is the same. I think we have always found a nice balance by simplifying the UI for mobile users. I haven't seen (until Derrick's screenshot) an example of a mobile device using the desktop version. It obviously doesn't work as it's not supposed to.

There's no reason not to update to the latest version of iOS for a particular device. iOS 12 works on phones up to and including the 6 while the latest iOS14, the latest iOS, works with iPhone6S and newer. So as long as you have a web site that works with both 12 and 14, that's all you need. It's up to the phone's owner and indeed in their very best interest to update to the latest operating system their device supports.

Yes, obviously the desktop version is not designed for use on phones but it works perfectly on iPads and tablets generally.

I suspect that Android phones are more problematic due to those phones seldom having operating system updates, so there is no choice but to stick with the system from the factory or perhaps one more update. Nevertheless there should be the occasional security update for them.

I find the mobile site for TFF to be near perfect on iPhones and Android. As said by Netherfield, it just works from the user's perspective, apart from for one person evidently.

You must have an iPhone 6 or older then. This means it is probably six or even seven years old, which isn't bad going for a smartphone. Every iPhone after that, including the 6S, can be updated to the very latest iOS 14.6
Perhaps you deserve a new all-singing-and-dancing iPhone after all this time? iPhone 12 is very nice indeed and has a much bigger screen than the standard 6 7 or 8 in a similar size body. From the X [ten] they did away with the massive wasted part that are the bezels or chin and forehead plus the home button. Also added extra storage capacity, much better cameras and really blazing-fast processors.
