Just seen this report... paragraph stood out “
It comes as the Australian government toughens its stance against people and groups who target farmers' livelihoods.
Prison terms of up to one year for campaigners who publish private information about farm businesses was promised in April this year.
Prime minister Scott Morrison called activists who target farmers 'un-Australian green criminals'.

From what I’ve seen on Facebook they are not helping much by diverting water away from those who are absolute desperate for it.ive seen a tv news reader break down in tears after hearing the plight of farmers who are on the verge of loosing everything.maybe our Aussie members can elaborate on the problems

my initial post was because I’m a UK farmer who’s on holiday in Auz ATM and I’m struck by the farmer support both in the shops and in the schools and in the press
As oppose to all the negative cr@p we get in the UK
I realise that may not be the case for actual auzzie farmers though

yeah, sorry, I wasn’t aiming that at you in particular . ..
Yes, I agree, the general public is mostly supportive & sympathetic towards farmers / agriculture & govts do recognise us as major contributors to the economy,

the face palm was in response to any praise of Scummo & his mates

don’t be fooled, the anti farm invasion laws ( which weren’t needed as current anti trespass laws were sufficient ) are just the thin edge of the wedge of much wider ranging anti protest laws in general - especially any climate protests, environmental protests or protests against the coal & CSG industries
As farmers, protesting against open cut coal mine & CSG developments which threaten not only the wider environment but more specifically our vital aquifers & water supplies - we can face up to 7 years gaol. We are rapidly going down the road to becoming a very authoritarian Police State

further to this, is the complete lack of any policy or leadership regarding future climate change, the last 2 or more years of severe droughts & the horrendous early start to our fire season . . . All the really offer at a grass roots practical level is “thoughts & prayers”, while both State & Fed governments have drastically reduced fire services funding . . .

We have been fighting coal & CSG here for over 10 years, but our govts constantly belittle & thwart our efforts. All they care about is coal . . . They are actively anti renewables . . .
State & Federal governments have either already brought in ( NSW ) or are planning on bringing in laws ( Feds ) making any protests against the fossil fuels industries illegal, with gaol sentences
Many of these protestors ARE farmers, with very real concerns about our water, our environment, about how climate change IS affecting us & our long term future . . .
In this country, many farmers, environmentalists & indigenous peoples have all come together as they recognise they all care about the “land” & have a common enemy . . .

Someone more qualified than me can maybe comment on irrigation water ( I am not an irrigator ), but this gives you an indication of what @nick... was talking about

We are on our second year of 0% water allocation.
The Murray river here has been running at minor flood level for months to suply South Australia their full allocation, while running thousands of ML a day into the ocean.
The government recently announced that they are paying South Australia $100 million dollars to turn their desalination plant on, so they will be pumping salty water from the ocean and paying that $100 million in power costs to desalinate it to provide fresh water, while down the coast they are running thousands of ML of fresh water into the ocean every day. As South Australia will now have some of their water needs provided by desalinated salt water, the water which was to be released from dams near here for them will now be offered to us at $100 ML. Unfortunately we are only going to get a maximum of 25 ML per farm, which wont water much.
